| Advice on Finding a Job/Internship | |
Finding a job or internship isn’t as hard as you’d think, as long as you’re open-minded. Seventy-eight percent of Juniatians take part in an internship over their four years at the school, and many are hired for the summer to work in different departments, especially in labs and research positions. Between Career Services, Campus Ministry, and helpful professors who are glad to aid you in your search, odds are good that you’ll find a good place to spend your summer or post-grad life. Campus Ministry can provide links to both Brethren Volunteer Service and Theological Exploration of Vocations (TEV) internships that will link you to your desired field somewhere in the U.S., and after your first summer with them, if you so desire, they’ll send you somewhere across the globe. And Career Services is always a good stop to see what your options are; they post a listing of available internships per field outside their office. It’s right across from the mailboxes in Ellis Hall, where you’ll see it every day. It’s always best to network, and at Juniata it’s fairly easy to do so. Contacts are easy to find, and you’ll establish relationships with people practically by default. Your professors are always glad to help and want to see you succeed, as does pretty much everyone on campus. Definitely check out the workshops Career Services offers, drop off your resumé with them before you graduate, and don’t hesitate to ask them for help—it’s what they’re there for. Go to the Student-Alumni events as well; alumni are full of good ideas, and they’re speaking from a “real world” perspective. They know what they’re talking about, and are eager to give advice and share their war stories. Check out JuniataJobs.com, stay in touch with professors and alumni, ask questions, and take initiative. What you can find may surprise you.
