Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

At a campus with a Casablanca mindset—“Everyone goes to Rick’s,” or in this case, J’s—what do you do when the spot for small-town college nightlife closes down, and the parties are dying away? The answer’s still unclear, but luckily, JCers are resourceful, so there’s no doubt there will be a new hotspot, though only time will tell where it is. For now, many students are branching out to the other bars in town. Memories has said it will welcome students, even if it’s not as overtly college-oriented as J’s was. As for the parties, the scene may be shifting away from East, but East will always be a place to go to let loose. House and campus parties are also on the rise to pick up the slack from the lack of nearby bar life.

Still, many students are disappointed with Juniata’s nighttime offerings. For the non-partying set, the College offers many weekend events and movies to keep people entertained, but even these get old after awhile. Be prepared to make your own fun. Students will often just party in their own rooms with a group of close friends. Some Juniata traditions, like Bar Walk and Pig Roast, take the nightlife into the daytime and never get old, and theme parties like East’s annual Pimps ‘n Hoes are campus favorites. Nightlife here is considerably tamer than at a lot of other schools. If you’re looking for clubbing or Fratland, you’d probably be better off at another school. They’re nonexistent here.

Small-Town but State College

Juniata's pretty mellow, although East can get kinda raucous. Most people who really want to party head over to State College on the weekend using the college provided shuttle. It's nice because you don't have to deal with drunks if you want to study, but it's there if you feel like a trip.

Definitely Not a Party School

Juniata doesn't have a lot of bars, and I don't think that there are any clubs in the area at all. There are usually a few parties on campus on the weekends, but Juniata is generally pretty quiet. If you want to go anywhere interesting, you'll need access to a car, since there aren't a lot of transportation options around Juniata.

The bar or a east party

As for the social scene, there is honestly not many places to go party or hangout around Huntingdon. If you're looking for a social scene, for students over 21, there are multiple bars that a majority of the older students go to on the weekends. For younger students, just hanging out with your friends on the weekends in their rooms is always fun and a good way to meet new people. Also, there are always the "east parties." This consists of loud music and a lot of dancing (usually).

Clubs? Sorry all, but you won’t find them here in Huntingdon. Check out State College instead, or if you really want to treat yourself, study abroad.

Cheapest Place to Get a Drink

Anywhere but Mimi’s

Bar ListingsWhat's This?

Memories (formerly J’s Tavern)

J’s was the favorite student hangout, and Memories has kept that location’s reputation as a major student hangout. While its drink menu is a little pricier than J’s once was, many students appreciate the more upscale ambience Memories provides enough to overlook the expense.

221 13th St.

(814) 643-0353

Mimi’s

Mimi’s is a trendy, taste-of-the-city fine dining restaurant that includes a bar. Its décor is chic and inviting, and it’s perfect for a dress-up, high-class special occasion.

312 Penn St.

(814) 643-7200

Village Tavern

If you’re interested in a drink here—well, nothing ventured, nothing gained—but there’s neither recommendation nor warning to give, because not many students go here

Johnny’s Bar

If J’s was “Rick’s,” Johnny’s is the Casablanca equivalent of the “Blue Parrot.” Johnny’s is always there, and while it’s more frequented by local residents, and students sometimes complain of the smoke, it’s a stop on the annual Senior Week Bar Walk nonetheless. It’s the closest bar to campus, and is drawing more student attention for that reason.

1301 Washington St.

(814) 643-6070

Boxer’s Café

Boxer’s is a restaurant with a great pub atmosphere and good food. There are always people there, but if you time it right, you’ll never have to wait long for a table, either. It has a great selection of different beer brews, but is not generally open as late as some of the other bars in town.

410 Penn St.

(814) 643-5013

Brass Rail Sports Bar

With J’s closed, more students are now checking out the Brass Rail, a sports bar located on the outskirts of town. It’s one of the few places in town that offer drink specials, and while some buzz—namely, in the Local Atmosphere section—wasn’t great, it’s probably worth a look, as the College nightlife scene is shifting.

4th St. and Rt. 22

(814) 643-3934

Jackson’s Place

Jackson’s is in the phonebook and thus it’s here in this guide, but it’s not frequented by students. If you’re interested in what it has to offer, and you’re 21 and over, you’ll have to venture in yourself and make your own report.

What to Do if You're Not 21What's This?

Mimi’s

Mimi’s is a stylish place to go if you’re not 21 and are looking for a nice place to spend an evening. It’s a classy locale for a girls’ night out or to celebrate an anniversary, and also serves nonalcoholic drinks for those who aren’t quite old enough to get the real thing.

312 Penn St.

(814) 643-7200

The Clifton 5

Well, if you’re not old enough for the bar options, there’s always the movies. The Clifton 5 is a charming movie theater with cheap tickets and food—you can get popcorn and drinks for two for less than the price of a $6 ticket—and a student discount with ID will get you in for $4 on Tuesday nights. The seats are somewhat bumpy, but the theater’s an old-style classic.

717 Washington St.

(814) 643-3310

Boxer’s Café

Boxer’s does serve alcohol, but it’s also a restaurant, and minors often dine there. See above or check out the Off-Campus Dining section for more.
