College Prowler Take

Safety and security aren’t really a problem at Juniata. While students aren’t naïve and common sense is always necessary when it comes to protecting valuables, the community on campus is really freakishly trusting. The greatest example of this is what happens when students head to the dining hall: they leave their coats and bags and backpacks outside the door, creating a scene vaguely reminiscent of the parting of the Red Sea, only with personal belongings instead of salt water. Aside from Lesher, which locks at 10 p.m., the dorms are never locked, though students will generally lock their rooms. Most students have no qualms about walking anywhere on campus, day or night. And it’s true—pretty much nothing ever happens. Bizarre? Sure, but that’s Juniata for you.

However, there are measures taken in advance to keep students safe. Students can usually spot security vehicles roaming around campus, and there are blue-light call-boxes sprinkled around campus as well. Security is never oppressive, but they will take action when necessary. However, the fact that their biggest conflict with students is illegally parked vehicles reiterates how safe the campus actually is. Huntingdon itself also has relatively low crime levels, and is a “leave your doors unlocked” kind of town, but in general, in town, common sense trumps community feeling, and students take more care with their personal safety.

I always felt safe there. I never heard of any major problems, and had no qualms about walking completely across campus alone in the middle of the night.

Juniata is the safest place I’ve ever been, to the point where I just assume that nobody will take anybody’s stuff when I’m at home, and I’ve been known to leave things unattended, only to be chastised by whomever I was with. The JCPD is kind of a joke in that they don’t look very assuming, but tick Rocco off, and face the wrath. With the 24-hour EMT service on campus you’re never without help if something bad happens.

It’s a very safe campus, with most dorms open 24 hours a day. Nothing too out of the ordinary ever happens. The security folks are nice people and do their jobs well. They are strict about parking tickets!

Ha! Seriously? It’s there, I guess. Most of the cops are bored.
