Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Central Pennsylvania will famously give you a run for your money when it comes to the weather. If you like to fully experience all four seasons, you’ll probably be delighted, as long as you pack accordingly and don’t mind the occasional extremes. The fall semester starts off hot, and turns into a gorgeous, crisp-aired spectacle when the leaves start changing. Winter can also start off comparably warm, but will soon morph into a harsh, continuous chill that often brings snow and makes the temperatures plunge well below freezing as the months progress. When spring finally comes along, the lawns in front of all the buildings sprout students as well as flowers and green grass; it’s the most feel-good, lighthearted time of the year, even though finals come careening in alongside the warm weather.

You’ll need a bit of everything to handle all the climate changes, and that includes both warm weather and warm winter clothes. Bring a heavy coat and sweaters, but also bring shorts, capris and skirts, and a fan—because for the short time that it’s hot, hot, hot, you’ll need them. However, aside from the occasional temperature extremes and a blizzard or two, you won’t have much to worry about in the name of extreme weather. Weather is colorful, but fairly normal and nothing to worry about. If you like seasonal variety, you’ll probably like it here.

Typical Pennsylvanian weather

The weather in central pennsylvania is very "on and off." The winter is cold and the summer is hot. Facilities do a good job of keeping snow cleared off the sidewalks and roads for the most part. Other than that, it will generally snow for a couple months, then move into milder weather, and then become fairly hot. The weather is very typical, seasonal weather. However, if a student is from states such as California or Florida, it might be a bit of a culture shock from them in regards to the weather.

Weather at Juniata

Juniata is in central Pennsylvania, so we experience typical northeast seasons. It gets very hot in the summer, and very cold in the winter. I grew up in Pennsylvania, so I never minded it, but I have heard some students complain. Just be prepared if you're not used to Pennsylvania weather.

It's Central PA, of Course It's Cold

At Juniata it gets cold pretty early on, it is Central Pennsylvania after all. Fortunately, the buildings are not far apart from each other, it never takes more than five minutes to get from one academic building to the next. We had few closings last year for the weather. There were a few days when we had nice, sunny and hot weather, then it went right back to cold and rainy. Most students live in campus, so the bad weather is not a problem for most people.
