There are many options for appartments near the school. The closer you want to the school the earlier you need to get it. They go anywhere from about $450-$800 for an appartment.

They are very strict when it comes to drinking, drugs, and letting people into the dorms. They will give you a warning and put you on academic probation for your first offence but on your second offense they will kick you out of the dorms.

Pretty much everyone here is white but everyone is very accepting of eachother in the ways that they are different. There are a lot of gay/lesbian/transgender people here. They are accepted nicely.

The dorms are for freshman only unless you get special permission. They are extremely old and extremely small. They don't have very much to offer either.

If you don't live in the dorms (available only to freshman) there is barely any parking. Parking is mostly located on the street around campus. Saying that, it is still easy to find close spots because many of the students walk or bike from there apartment. After 5 pm, parking becomes even better because all the faculty and staff's cars are gone.

Being a painting major is clearly the best. We are the only department to have full studios with a gallery to show work bimonthly. We also have a large faculty with expertise in everything from the renaissance to modern, so just about any question you have can be answered by email or a short trip to the offices. The program is very intense, but constantly being around your peers and critique, really helps develop a successful studio practice.

KCAI is really close to two popular areas called Westport and the Plaza. It's also a short distance from the bar area downtown called Power and Light accessible by bus. There are tons of varieties of places to go, such as dive bars or classy martini bars. There is also tons of entertainment throughout the year. Kansas City has a wonderful local scene that they take pride in.

The academics at KCAI are what you make of it. As a freshman, going through the foundations program, get teachers of good standing behind you. They will mentor and guide you through the next three hardest years of you life. It is so worth it. The teachers are not only passionate about what you teach but your work as well. It's crucial to stay motivated and inspired when your grade depends on the quality of your artwork. Speaking of, no matter what department you're in, the studio spaces are pretty okay. There are proper ventilation systems and tons of wall space. I personally make larger work, so I tend to even use empty classrooms after hours.

The computers at KCAI are there for when you need them. During midterms and finals the computer lab extends their hours. It's also super easy to print using your print account that exists online, you just download your file to a library computer.

Our campus is small but we are constantly having shows in the departmental galleries and putting on monthly/annual events including the drag show, film screenings, extra-curricular figure drawing sessions, and our "field day" to say a few.

We don't have a "Greek Life", we're an art school.
College Senior 2013-02-07T00:46:10Z
The best thing about our school's campus life is that students are free to organize and plan events.
College Senior 2013-02-07T00:39:40Z
Compared to other prestigious art schools, KCAI offers pretty good scholarships. Out of the three art schools I applied to, KCAI gave me the most money but for the amount I still have to pay, I feel like we should have more/better facilities and, as students, we should be more involved in the decisions made at the school rather than the administration (which has nearly no background in the arts) make all decisions without our input.

Limited spots available unless you have a parking pass.

KC has some of the best restaurants in the country!
College Sophomore 2013-01-30T04:42:48Z
The food is not horrible, but it is definitely not worth the price for students who do not have a meal plan,

Public transportation is near the school and also near the apartment complex where I live. Most students, however, live on or near campus and many amenitites (shops, restaraunts, grocery) are nearby the area.

Weather is bearable. Classes have not gotten canceled due to extreme weather and most everyone lives on or near campus. Usually when the weather is nice, people have lunch on the lawn under the shade of the trees. Classes are also held outside at times of nice weather as well.

There are many choice areas to apply to off-campus housing wise. There are apartment complexes walking distance from the school which is convenient to save on gas. The neighborhood is friendly and quiet. Weport shops and restaraunts are nearby as well as the Country Club Plaza shops and restaraunts (which is walking distance from the campus). Costs vary among apartment complexes, the higher cost apartments are on the west side of the Country Club Plaza and the more affordable are closer to the school.

Greek life has no affect on the KCAI community because we do not have Greek housing.

In Westport there is a vast variety of places to enjoy. Whether you are vegan, have a glutton allergy, or really love to try new foods theres endless choices (Ethiopian, Thai, Korean, etc, and a lot are authentic). If you want to get your drink on this is the spot for it too. Lots of specials on Mondays and all the bars I've been to have a great atmosphere about them.

Great bus line called The Max. Not to many weirdos, runs completely through the city, and is free with a school id.

I have never lived off campus, I hear there are lots of places to choose from.

Not too bad, your choice whether or not to attend parties.
