College Prowler Take
The influence exercised by the football program at K-State is truly epic in scope. When the team came from behind to defeat No. 1 Oklahoma in the 2003 conference championship and claim its first-ever Big 12 title, it was like Jesus had come again. The news that celebrated head coach Bill Snyder was retiring in 2006 seemed to stir, not dampen spirits—the University president himself credited Snyder with engineering “the single greatest turnaround in American Division I collegiate football history.” This zeal by no means fizzles after graduation; alumni snap up season tickets and watch parties are organized by spirit clubs everywhere from Alaska to Florida. Though football often upstages other sports, it is by no means the only player on the scene. The equestrian team, for instance, is ranked first in its league, and women’s volleyball made quite a name for itself in the 2004-2005 season. Women’s rugby games too, though chronically under-attended, are well worth a watch. In addition to this, intramural and club sport participation is mammoth. How many colleges can lay claim to parachuting and inner tube water polo teams? Even non-team players are not immune to the prevailing mentality. Come mid-March, the campus sidewalks bloom into kaleidoscopes of spandex.

“Football is king here, but basketball and volleyball are also very popular. There are also intramural teams for everything from softball to inner tube water polo. Intramurals are a really fun way to be involved on campus, especially if you like sports but are athletically challenged.” |

“By far, the biggest sport on campus is football. A lot of the students get tickets to the games. Many also attend the basketball games as well. Currently, students can get into volleyball, baseball, and women’s basketball games free by showing their student ID card.” |

“Football is our sport of choice. Almost all other sports get lost in its shadow. Recently, we haven’t been so hot in the football division, but we’re building ourselves back up. Intramural sports aren’t as apparent on campus and are mostly seen as hobbies or clubs.” |

Gyms and Facilities
- Chester E. Peters Recreation Complex - As venerated and well-maintained as the football team, the rec center is the venue of choice for ballers of any persuasion. Offering basketball, squash, handball/racquetball, and wallyball courts in addition to a weight/fitness area, a combatives zone, an aerobics room, two running tracks, a video lounge, table tennis, saunas, a circuit/stretching area, and a wellness resource center, it’s an athlete’s Eden—and it’s handicapped-accessible to boot.
- Natatorium - The natatorium is a resource that remains largely untapped, though not for lack of assets, which include one pool designated for lap swimming, another for diving, and a third for water basketball, jogging, and aerobics as well as recreational swimming.
- Outdoor Facilities - Horseshoe pits. No, seriously. Additional, less overtly cow-collegey options include intramural playing fields, sand volleyball courts, tennis courts, handball/racquetball courts, and a running trail.

You have to ask? The devotion with which football is followed here borders the religious. Students who generally remain physically conjoined to their mattresses until noon can be sighted ducking into shower stalls at 7 a.m. in the event of a mid-morning home game. Their loyalty is not without foundation. Since Coach Bill Snyder took the reins in 1988, the team has rocketed from a bottom-of-the-basement embarrassment to a resident powerhouse of the Big 12. Basketball probably qualifies as number two, but the perennial mediocrity of the team prevents the onset of a similar fanaticism.

Best Place to Take a Walk
The Quinlan Natural Area, a strip of woodland winding along Petticoat Lane, is one of the best-kept secrets on campus. Soothing and secluded, it makes for ideal introvert territory, complete with babbling brook.
