College Prowler Take
Of all the buildings on campus, none boasts a higher quality quotient than the Charles E. Peters Recreation Complex. As slick and well-maintained as the students who frequent it, the rec center is a case study in University funds effectively spent. Its fellow facilities are functional, if less overtly impressive. The Union meets the baseline student center requirements—food court, bookstore, mini-mart, bowling alley, and movie theater all included. Seasoned K-Staters are well aware that the second-floor Cats Pause Lounge is one of the quietest, comfiest retreats on campus. Without question, the Union is where it’s at. In addition to the poetry slams, fashion shows, and breakdance competitions it routinely hosts, it’s home to a number of ongoing exhibits that are well worth a look—the Dreyfus Affair showcase and the Kemper Art Gallery in particular. Campus-based entertainment crops up outside the Union as well, but you have to know where and when to look. Stopping by the International Student Center to pick up a list of Coffee Hour dates and McCain Auditorium for a schedule of events at the beginning of the semester is highly recommended. It takes some trying, but with sufficient effort, you can always find something to do on campus, which is more than can be said of the surrounding town.

“Although I don’t know enough about other campuses to make a comparison, the facilities at K-State seem nice. I really don’t use many of the facilities on campus beyond the library and the rec center. The library is spacious and modern with friendly staff, and the rec center, if a bit crowded before spring break, contains a wide range of activities and ways to stay fit." |
FactsWhat To Do on Campus
Within the past four years, Kansas State has provided its students with the opportunity to succumb to the spell of a professional hypnotist, clobber their teaching assistants in a campus-wide pillow-fight, and have their copies of The Hours signed by Michael Cunningham in person. More conventional offerings include the Union Programming Council’s weekly film series, the theater department’s regular productions, the innumerable athletic events, the equally innumerable Bible study groups, and the occasional date auction.
Favorite Things To Do
For those still on the temperance wagon, there is the Union AfterHours Program (offering everything from T-shirt tie-dyeing to karaoke) and the weekly film series (offering everything from “Goodfellas” to “Mean Girls”). For everyone else, there are the football games. Unflaggingly popular and almost universally revered, football is to K-State what the potato was to 19th-century Ireland. Among daytime options are the Landon Lectures, a series of three to five speeches delivered in McCain Auditorium each year by prominent political figures, including cabinet members and former presidents.
