College Prowler Take
According to official statistics, only 20 percent of the student population is affiliated with a fraternity or sorority, but it feels like only 20 percent isn’t. Despite composing less than a fifth of total student population, Greeks have occupied 56 percent of Student Government Association offices and 65 percent of all campus leadership positions within the past ten years. Philanthropy is also a major component of Greek life, with the various houses logging more than 15,000 hours of community service in one year. Their academic achievements are no less impressive, with fraternity and sorority members maintaining a collective GPA higher than that of their peers since 1990.
Before the non-Greek completely resets his stereotypes, he should be aware that a number of them—positive and negative—do check out. Faithful as many of the fraternity members are to their studies, they are no less devoted to their alcohol. Seven fraternities and eleven sororities are dry, but you’d never know it. Come Friday night, there are as many kegs along Sunset Avenue as there are cars on the curb. The situation overall is heartening for Greeks and non-Greeks alike: the former because all the traditional standbys are in place and the latter because they have reason to respect the Betas they party with.

“I wouldn’t say that Greek life dominates the campus, but it is a large group of people. I’m not involved in the Greek system, but from what I’ve seen, it keeps those individuals busy. Each house has a different personality associated with it. If you choose to be in the Greek system you just have to find the house that’s right for you.” |

“Greek Life is apparently a big deal here. I don’t understand why, but who asked me? Those who are a part of Greek life tend to flaunt the fact by wearing their letters all around campus. They generally give off an air that they are better then those who aren’t in a house. Not all are like this, but a big number are, so it gives the rest a bad name.” |

“I don’t get these geeks. Why don’t they just learn to be cool instead of so geeky? They need to stop wearing Abercrombie and catching onto ‘faux hawks’ three years after the fact.” |
