Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

To call the grounds grandmother-friendly would be an understatement. Students walk across campus at all hours of the night with few to no fears for their personal safety. The emergency intercoms dotting the sidewalks serve a primarily decorative function. Kansas State maintains both a 24-hour escort service and a special program known as SafeRide, which permits students the luxury of puking over their toilet rather than their steering wheel. If the police do make an appearance on campus, chances are it’s in response to either (a) a Moore Hall fire alarm or (b) a second Moore Hall fire alarm.

This is not to say the University is altogether free of crime. Date rape has become something of a problem in recent years, though the administration is doing its darnedest to stamp it out. For males, entering an all-female dorm without a resident-escort is strictly prohibited, and even with an escort, signing in is mandatory. Petty theft has also prompted administrative retaliation. Two years ago, Hale Library launched an anti-theft campaign, which involved librarians darting around, sprinkling hot pink “Gotcha!” slips on all unattended belongings in sight. But by far the most heinous acts on campus are those perpetrated by the physics department—and without a hint of remorse. Semester-long 7:30 a.m. lab sections? That’s downright criminal.

Safe and Secure

K-State has wonderful campus security. There are emergency phones with very visible blue lights all over campus. The police can be seen every day, just checking up on things. They also drop in on the residence hall lobbies during the night. Most of the time, we don't even lock our room doors. They also offer a free program called Wildcat Walk, where someone from the security staff will walk with a student anywhere on campus in order to make sure they come home safely.
