Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Take away the college, and what you’re looking at seems to be the world’s largest assisted-care community. The prevailing fogeyness translates into a local government guided by a conservative mentality—much to the dismay of the undergraduate leftist bloc. From time to time, the two sides lock horns, as was the case when the city mayor proposed a “Marriage Protection Week” in response to rapid gains made on the gay-rights front in the fall of 2003. Much of the town rallied behind its leader, while the students demonstrated in protest.

Manhattan itself is a flavorful blend of small-town sleepiness and college-community chutzpah. During the day, you’ll encounter passersby here and there, but by 10 p.m., the streets are as vacant as the windows. Aggieville, on the other hand, doesn’t really do bedtime. Essentially a continuous string of bars with the occasional coffeeshop or bookstore thrown in for variety’s sake, it’s practically off-campus housing for some students. The dichotomy here—sleep or Sam Adams—is often a vexing one. Still, with some digging, alternatives can be unearthed: PJ’s Restaurant and Pub goes salsa every Thursday, Gumby’s Pizza presents live music shows, and for unblushing libertines, there’s always Manhattan Hill.

School Spirit Is What It Is All About!

Manhattan is very much a college town. Everyone is there to support the school athletically and academically. There are a lot of fun things to do but you have to find them with your friends. There is a movie theater, a mall, many restaurants, and always a fun event on campus!
