Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Winters in Kansas range from Siberian to mild, and spring generally makes about forty false starts. The only season to approach consistency is summer, which never fails to sizzle and steam. Rain occurs spasmodically three out of the four seasons in every imaginable incarnation: split-second downpours, soft mid-afternoon showers, and interminable, bone-chilling drizzles. Of all the seasons, fall ranks as the most photogenic. The summer heat usually lingers until late October, and the campus, awash in the crimson and gold of high autumn, is nothing short of breathtaking.

What all this means is that you should pack the way you would for a tricontinental tour: wedge the earmuffs behind the sunscreen and underneath the umbrella. Boots, while not a necessity, are nonetheless advisable—particularly in mid-March when the path up to the Derb froths into a stretch of white-water rapids. Anemometers are entirely optional. As extensive as the state’s tornado track record is, the chance of you actually witnessing one in your four years is slim. Still, when the sirens sound, it injects a bolt of drama into the meteorological proceedings—not that they were in need of much to begin with.

It's Kansas...

In Kansas, the running joke is that if you don't like the weather, wait around because it's likely to change within the next five minutes. For the most part, we have beautiful weather. It may be cold and blustery, but the sun usually shines. We do have the occasional storm, but it's usually not an every day occurrence. During the winter, we have chances of snow. We've learned to just deal with whatever the day brings and how it brings it to us.

Kansas Weather

In the fall it will be very hot, and getting to classes far across campus can sometimes be sweaty. In the winter, it will be very cold. Kansas has the extremes so this should be expected. As a Kansas resident all my life, I'm used to it so it doesn't really affect my experience.
