Tips for Earning Credits
  • Make sure you have the necessary proof of your work/life experience (portfolio, resume, etc.), and Kaplan will work with you to give you credit for it.
  • Send in official transcripts from any previous colleges you attended as soon as possible.
  • Stay in close contact with the academic team and your enrollment adviser. Make sure they are aware of any work or life experiences you have so they can make sure you get as much credit as possible.
  • Take the CLEP or Challenge Exam tests—they are usually pass or fail and a great way to get credit for previous experience.

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The academic flexibility is great at Kaplan University. This is apparent even before you apply—when you sign up for more information via the University’s website, someone will contact you in regards to what times will fit your schedule. And once you start attending Kaplan, your academic adviser will adjust to the times that fit your needs and accommodate your schedule. The one thing that students will need to fit into their schedules is the live seminars taught by the professors.

However, in general, students will encounter few struggles with flexibility, and if an unplanned life issue or problem comes up, Kaplan is very understanding. If you start to fall behind because of any problems in your life, make sure to take the initiative to call your academic adviser so he or she can give you some suggestions on what steps to take to make sure everything is resolved and you don’t fall even further behind.

Flexibility & Transferring Credits

This is the most convenient way to take college courses to me. I have total flexibility of what I want to take and when I take it. I work and have a child also, so it has worked out great!

Transferring credits were no problem at all for me, they accepted all of the prior credits I had taken. A lot of colleges don't do that.

Facts

Academic/Testing Requirements

The academic requirements for admission to Kaplan can depend on if you have already attended a college or university or are just starting as an undergraduate student. The process can be quite trying for some, but the academic advisers will let each student know what testing and documents are needed based on their background and goals. There are some grade requirements for graduate or transfer students, and the dean will review the information to make decisions regarding the admission of students. Some students can take a placement test regarding life experience, such as the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) test, which can make the process easier; plus, these are pass-or-fail tests.

Transferring Credits In & Out

Students seeking credit transfer need to submit an official transcript with a transfer credit evaluation. Kaplan also offers Advanced Start bachelor’s degrees for students who have already earned an associate’s or bachelor’s degree from an accredited college. In these cases, lower-level classes will be transferred as a block of 90 credits, and upper-level classes will be evaluated on a course-by-course basis.

Work & Life Experience Credits

Kaplan does offer credit for work experience, but you will need to speak to your academic adviser or whomever contacted you with more information about attending the University. You will definitely need your transcripts from any previous college you attended, and the amount of credit you receive will be determined by Kaplan. Many students who received credit for life work/experience said the process was easy and Kaplan is willing to work with everyone.

Typical Session Length

Classes at Kaplan University are 10 weeks long.

Class Style & Structure

For each degree program, there are required and optional classes each student must take. Once a student’s class schedule is set, they will receive an e-mail with links to each class homepage. This is where the professors will provide a syllabus with the requirements and class work schedule. It is broken down like a calendar, so students will know what is expected from them throughout the course. If students abide by these guidelines throughout the course, they can expect to get good grades. In terms of interaction, students and teachers communicate through online discussion boards.
