Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

As at most universities, living in the residence halls is required of underclassmen. This piece of information is usually followed by sighs and groans, but the fact of the matter is that most will enjoy their stay. Dorm life does offer some distinct advantages, including proximity to classes and campus life. Winters in Ohio can be rough, and those in the residence halls will have a much shorter trek to class than their off-campus peers. In addition, dormitories are arguably the most pragmatic way to meet new people. This is especially beneficial to freshmen, who might otherwise feel disconnected within the context of the University. Enough generalities—let's talk specifics. As a freshman, you'll most likely reside in the Eastway or Tri-Towers complexes, a collection of eight halls with social aspects that cater to the first-year experience. Rooms are on the smaller side, and all four of Eastway's halls lack air conditioning. But you'll be in close quarters with your freshman peers, and you can bond over your shared discomfort in the warmer months. If this sounds unbearable to you, fear not—there are alternatives for freshmen who seek them out. Those who act early may secure a room in one of the Centennial Courts, and students in the Honors College are guaranteed housing in the honors halls, Stopher and Johnson. These rooms are carpeted, air-conditioned, have individual bathrooms, and are relatively large (as far as dorms go).

Hygienically speaking, the halls are all generally well-maintained, and the University has a dedicated service for requesting maintenance or repairs. Upperclassman housing is typically spacious, and what the underclassman halls lack in space they make up for in social atmosphere. Though statistics show that the majority of students opts to move off campus after two years, most will look back on their time in the residence halls as the setting for some of their best memories at Kent State.

On Campus Dorms

Living on campus is wonderful. The dorms are recently new while others were renovated. The cost is very reasonable considering that some dorms have their own private bathrooms.

The Dorms

The newer dorms on campus are 10 years old or younger, the others are about 25. Apart from some having community bathrooms it actually was pretty fun. Leave your door opened and you'll make friends with half the neighbors in no time.

Decent Dorm Life

The Kent campus has nice dorms and I was very surprised at how nice the freshmen dorms are. There is a market in the lobby, computer labs, and a lot of study areas. I am looking forward to the living conditions improving though each year.
