College Prowler Take
Unless you live in the Kent area, you’ll probably be living in the dorms your first two years of college. No matter how many horror stories you hear about the dorms, you will probably enjoy your stay, even if you add one or two of your own tales to the bunch. Most of the “better” dorms are reserved for upperclassmen, and rightfully so. Some of the less prestigious buildings don’t have air conditioning, so those used to climate control may want to pack a fan or suffer through the hot first month of class. Many consider the underclassmen dorms as a sort of initiation into Kent State and college life. Most of the freshmen live in Small Group, which is unofficially called “Small World.” This is because the freshmen dorms are clustered together on the far end of campus and even have their own cafeteria, so in a way, it’s like its own small universe. These dorms aren’t necessarily known for their cleanliness, but students residing here will definitely meet a lot of new freshmen and make some quick friends. So don’t fret if you’re stuck here; you will move on to bigger and better things your sophomore year. If you can afford it, try to get into the Centennial dorms. They’re the nicest and cleanest dorms on campus.

Variety of Options
B+
There's a lot of different types of places to live while on campus. Don't expect luxury (except for Centennial and maybe the Honors dorms), but there not bad places to live.
Different dorms have different social scenes. Some leave their doors open, in others people will proactively ignore you.

I lived in the honors dorms before the University rebuilt them. It was horrible. I felt like I was living in a jail cell. Then I moved into Beall, which was great, because I had my own room and only had to share a bathroom with a few people. It was quieter because the walls weren’t paper thin. |

Tri-Towers is a nightmare. I’ve seen everything from dead squirrels outside of people’s rooms to holes punched through the drywall. If you’re going to live on campus, stay away from Small Group and Tri-Towers. |

Dorms are a rip-off. If you get the opportunity to move off campus, jump on it. It’s expensive to live on campus. Living on your own is a chance to practice some responsibility. |

The dorms are nice. Wherever you...
The dorms are nice. Wherever you live, your classes are pretty much a 15-minute walk, maximum. The only dorms that are really far away is Small Group. The Eastway dorms are called ‘24-hour quiet’ and ‘substance-free,’ but that doesn’t mean no one’s drinking there. They’re just quiet parties. It’s a very nice place to live. |
