Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

While Kent State isn’t one of the most technologically-advanced schools in the nation, it is doing more and more each year to improve its equipment. Two of its current projects include improving the accessibility of the wireless network, which is currently limited, and trying to make the University’s network more secure. This, unfortunately, leaves students blocked from most file sharing networks and the like. One way around this is using Apple’s iTunes program, which allows students to freely and legally share music files with others on the network. Your music library will grow tenfold. And don’t worry, X-Box Live will still work in the dorms.

It’s your best bet to bring your own computer with you, but you don’t have to. There are computer labs everywhere on campus, and most of the dorm labs are open 24 hours. There is also access to printers, many popular programs, and even things like CD burners for class projects. There are so many computers available that you shouldn’t have trouble finding one. If you do have a laptop, however, you can tap into the wireless networks on the first floors of many of the dorms and in popular places like the Kent Student Center Hub, which holds the food court. If you take your laptop with you to some of the trendier establishments in Kent, like coffeeshops, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to see that they offer free wireless Internet access.

Just Above Average

The tech people here don't seem too entirely bright. I mean with Mac's they seem to know their stuff, but I still wouldn't trust them with my computer. The labs are solid labs. The internet connection within the labs is well above average most of the time, however, the wireless internet tends to fluctuate often.

Computer Labs

There are many available computer labs at Kent State Tuscarawas. They have an upstairs lab which has comfortable lounge chairs, vending machines and a help desk. It may get noisy at times so you always have the option of the library computers. It is quieter and has a printer and scanner but they cost 7 cents a copy! i bought my own printer! There are also places around campus that give you the option of plugging in your own laptop, which work out nice as well!

Did You Know?

Kent State recently upgraded the FlashCard, allowing students to make copies using “FlashCash,” which can be added at various stations across campus, including the first floor of the Kent Student Center.

The media computers in the Main Library allow students to burn CDs, make PowerPoint slides, and access many multimedia applications. Aides are available for beginners.

There are wireless “FlashZone” access points in the first floor lounges of each residence hall, the first floor of the Kent Student Center, and its lawn. This wireless network is constantly expanding.
