Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Looking at the raw statistics, it may seem like Kent State is about as diverse as a bag of red jellybeans, but by actually experiencing the campus first-hand, you will realize that the campus really isn’t so monochromatic. While the majority of the students are white, this doesn’t mean there isn’t a strong minority presence on campus. If it involves an ethnicity, religion, or sexual orientation, there is already a group on campus set up to represent them. Many of these clubs and organizations are highly visible on campus and are some of the most active groups. Many host campus-wide events and celebrity performers, like Margaret Cho. These celebrities come not only to entertain the Kent State student body, but also to help garner support.

There are Golden Flashes from almost every state in the nation, as well as from all around the world. There is such a blending of economic classes, races, genders, political beliefs, and religions that many students coming to Kent State from small, rural towns are completely in shock to find that so many types of people exist. There is definitely the same liberal slant that has been at Kent State since the ‘70s, so people are generally accepting of those who are different than they are.

Diversity

Kent state has a wonderful culmination of every race, sexuality, gender, and ethnic group. I love the way everyone is so accepting of one another. It makes me so proud.

Diversity Is a Good Thing

The highschool that I gratuated from was large and extremely diverse, there was every type of race and class type at my school. Being at KSU I believe that it is diverse because I see different types of people all the time, it is just not as shocking to me because of my highschool. I like being at a diverse school because you are able to learn about different cultures and you are not around the same "type" of people all the time.

Very Accepting

Kent State is full of minorities. They have no problem fitting right in here. They are treated just the same as everyone else, and there is no limit on how many can be here.

Facts

Gay Pride

The gay community isn’t prominent on campus, but it’s definitely there. Fusion, Kent State’s LGBT magazine, rated Kent State as one of the five most gay-friendly universities in Ohio. The meetings for Kent State’s LGBT group, PRIDE!Kent, are always crowded.

Political Activity

Though Kent State has a history of liberal-based protests in its past, the campus is relatively calm. It is still liberal-leaning, but there is a prominent conservative minority on campus. Typically, the majority of the protesting is done in honor of the May 4 shootings.

Economic Status

The majority of students are middle class, though there are exceptions. There are a lot of “rich kids” floating around campus.

Most Common Religions

Christian groups are the most prevalent, hosting weekly meetings and many on-campus events. There is also a strong Muslim presence on campus.

Minority Clubs on Campus

There are dozens of minority student groups on campus, ranging from ethnic to religious. If you can think of a minority, there is probably a club formed for them.
