Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There is a drug scene at Kent. However, such knowledge can easily be obtained through reason and not through experience. The drug scene is not very visible––especially on campus. One is most likely to encounter it at off-campus parties, but alcohol is far more prevalent. As far as pressure to drink and use drugs goes, whether or not students experience it rests mainly on the people with which they choose to spend their time. Neither drugs nor alcohol are absolutely essential to having a full social life, and partying can be done responsibly.

Partying in the dorms is a separate issue. Each hall is patrolled nightly by yellow-shirted security guards, and the discovery of substance abuse in a dormitory will have definite consequences, as these guards don't hesitate to involve the local police. In the dorms, smoking is less prevalent than drinking due to its detectable aroma and the presence of sensitive smoke detectors. Those students who don't keep the noise level in check are the most likely to get caught. The policies in place are enforced, but students do risk drinking in the dorms. One will likely find at Kent what he or she could expect to find on most college campuses. While present, alcohol and other drugs are entirely avoidable; the degree to which a student becomes involved with them depends on a student’s desires.

I Mostly Just See Drinking

Everyone goes out on thursdays through saturdays and all I really see is drinking and sometimes weed. It's just depends on the person.

Frequent marijuana use

Drug usage is very prevalent on and off-campus. I am in my fourth year at Kent State and I have basically seen it all. About 90% of the people I have met at Kent smoke marijuana regularly. Also, I have seen almost any other drug you can possibly think of on many occasions. Out of all the people I know who use drugs about only 10 of them have been caught. Campus is very relaxed about marijuana smoking on campus if you live in the dorms. Rarely does anyone get caught. Also, drug usage other than marijuana is basically free range in the dorms. Security minds their own business unless you are making a terrible noise violation, but other than that you will not have security problems with drinking or using drugs.

Out of Sight, Out of Mind

It's a typical college, if you want drugs then you can get them but it's not forced down your throat. You also don't need to worry at your usual party either.
