Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There is a noticeable presence of security personnel at Kent State, but this fact is generally seen as positive, and safety measures lend students a peace of mind while on campus. While they are by no means overbearing, it is nearly impossible to walk anywhere on campus at night without seeing one of the student security aides in their bright yellow uniforms. Most of them are pretty amiable, and oftentimes students will be reprimanded rather than disciplined for any unruly actions. Security aides are not out to bust students, but they will definitely intervene when it comes to any disturbances or illegal activity. At their discretion, University Police can become involved, and the measures that police can enact against offending students are much more severe. Security escorts are available each night from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m., and emergency phones are scattered around campus. Most of the paths around campus are well-lit, and there are few, if any, crimes committed against students on campus. The town and campus are generally safe, but of course, standard personal safety rules still apply.

The DeWeese Health Center is located on campus in an accessible location, and provides an array of standard resources, ranging from psychological services and depression screenings to pharmaceutical and nonemergency medical care. University Health Services also funds programming to promote health awareness on campus.

New Freshman

In the times I have been on campus, I have always felt very safe. Every few miles there is an "emergency tower" where you can call for help if it is ever needed. There is also a security guard offered to those who are walking alone at night that will escort you to where you need to go if you ever feel unsafe. I applaud Kent State on this for making the campus safe.

We Are Kept up to Date

When an incident or crime has happened on or near campus, we are alerted immediately through email and given advice. In addition to our security, this makes me feel much more aware.

Health and Safety

I appreciate the notifications of things happening on campus - it makes me feel that the security forces are proactive and not hiding events.
