Quick Stats

School Slang
  • The Brain: A giant, orange brain sculpture that looms outside Merrill Hall in a garden of sculptural books
  • FLASHcard: Your Kent State student ID. Its magnetic strip holds your meal plan, FLASHcash, and it can be programmed to allow you access to restricted rooms and wings.
  • FLASHcash: FLASHcash can be used like a credit card to all on-campus and off-campus locations that accept it.
  • FlashLine: FlashLine is the online Web portal for Kent State University. Use FlashLine to schedule your classes, check email, and access many other important functions. You can basically use FlashLine to plan your entire college career.
  • The Hub: Area of the student center that houses restaurants
  • The Rat: This is the nickname of the Rathskeller, the trendy lower level of the student center that houses a coffee shop, Damon's, pool tables, lounge areas, and a bar.
  • The Rec: The Student Recreation and Wellness Center (see why they just call it the “Rec”?)
Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Apply for housing as early as possible—the best dorms fill up quickly.
  • For most, having a car on campus is not necessary.
  • Scout out the locations of your classes beforehand, to avoid being very lost and very late on the first day.
Tips to Succeed
  • Don’t go home every weekend.
  • Don't dwell on high school. Keep in touch with your good friends, but take advantage of the new environment.
  • Don't skip class. Once you do, it becomes increasingly easier to justify. Though most professors don't take attendance, you'll miss a lot if you're not there in person.
  • Get to know your professors, and utilize office hours.
  • In the residence halls, prop your door open—it's a great way to meet new people.
  • Join at least a few organizations of interest to you—preferably one involved in your major and another in a separate interest.
  • Semesters go faster than one would think—prioritize from the get-go and stay on top of your commitments.
  • Start studying in advance to avoid being up all night before an important exam.
  • The primary reason for attending the University is to receive an education—never put parties before academics. However, budget your time wisely to ensure that you have time to relax and socialize.

Campus

The campus has tons of stuff you can do or try. Its just the right size too. Not to big but also not to small. I recommend to all future students to take a tour to figure out if Kent is right.

New Freshman

When I was on a tour of campus, I could not help but notice the amount of black squirrels overtaking the campus. Out on the lawn they were everywhere! I was in awe and quickly questioned the tour guide about this and she proceeded in telling the group about how the black squirrels originated here after being legally imported from Canada in February of 1961. This gives the campus, in my opinion, a great deal of fame for having their own thriving population of black squirrels.

Facts

Traditions
  • Black Squirrel Festival: The Black Squirrel Festival is held in the Risman Plaza in front of the Kent Student Center to honor the squirrel intruders from Canada. There are booths set up by most of the main organizations on campus, as well as live music, great food, door prizes, merchandise, and just a fun atmosphere throughout the entire day. There is often an after-party where a movie is shown.
  • College Fest/Drinkin' on Lincoln/Shermania: As the semester draws to a close, students celebrate the coming summer and warmer weather by occupying several local streets for day-long festivities, typically involving lots of alcohol and revelry.
  • Fashion School Showcase: Every year, the fashion merchandising and design majors put on a fashion show that showcases some of the best designs in the department. The show takes place in mid-April and is a very big deal on campus. Tickets sell out quickly, so get in line early.
  • Flash Fest: Every spring semester, Kent State hosts Flash Fest, an outdoor festival complete with a range of activities and a major headlining musical act.
  • Halloween: Halloween is one of the most prominent holidays celebrated at Kent State. Students usually begin planning their costumes a year in advance. On the big night, students wander down Main Street dressed up, ducking in and out of party to party. There is typically a lot of drinking involved, but it’s by no means a requirement to participate in the festivities.
  • Karaoke: Though not everyone participates in karaoke in the Rathskeller, those who do get really into it. There are more than 10,000 songs to choose from, so just about any song you can think of is at your disposal. Weekly winners duke it out at the end of the semester to win a grand prize and the coveted title of "Karaoke Superstar."
Urban Legends
  • The black squirrels escaped from a secret research project on campus and started a colony at KSU (not true—although the actual story is just as interesting).
  • The buildings were erected in such a way that makes the Kent State campus a giant wind tunnel (not true—although it does get suspiciously windy near the student center).
