Inside Scoop

Quick Stats

School Slang
  • The Brain: A giant, orange brain sculpture that looms outside Merrill Hall in a garden of books
  • Coneys: Short for Main Street Coneys
  • Euro Gyro: Short for Europe Gyro
  • FlashCard: Your Kent State student ID. Its magnetic strip holds your meal plan, FlashCash, and it can be programmed to allow you access to restricted rooms and wings.
  • FlashCash: FlashCash can be used like a credit card to all on-campus and off-campus locations that accept it (see Off-Campus Dining section).
  • FlashLine: FlashLine is the online Web portal for Kent State University. Use FlashLine to schedule your classes, check your e-mail, and access many other important functions. You can basically use FlashLine to plan your entire college career.
  • FlashMail: Your Kent State e-mail account
  • The Rat: Stands for the Rathskeller, referring to the trendy lower level of the Student Center that houses a pizza shop, pool tables, and a bar
  • The Rec: The Student Recreation and Wellness Center (see why they just call it the “Rec”?)
  • Small World: KSU lingo for “Small Group,” a.k.a. First Year Experience. It’s off by itself in the corner of campus and even has its own dining hall, so it’s like its own small world.
Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Apply for housing as early as possible to avoid getting stuck in the crappy dorms with other slackers.
  • If you bring a lot of food from home, you probably won’t eat it.
  • If you wait until the first day of class to find your buildings, you’ll probably be very lost and very late.
  • Most of the events during orientation week are for suckers.
  • Orientation class is one of the most worthless classes ever.
  • There is a room freeze after first few weeks of school, so if your roommate is crappy, you’re stuck.
Tips to Succeed
  • Don’t go home every weekend.
  • Go to office hours, and get to know your professors.
  • Join at least one organization of interest to you—especially one in your major; you’ll make most of your friends this way.
  • Keep your dorm’s door open occasionally to meet some people on your floor.
  • Move on with your life; don’t dwell on what you did or did not do in high school.
  • Never put a party before your academics.
  • Skipping class is an addiction—nay, a disease. Don’t get in the habit of doing it, or you’ll never stop.
  • Start studying in advance—that way, you aren’t up all night the day before an important exam.

Distance Learning

I take classes through a University Partnership program on Lorain County Community College's campus. This way, I do not have to drive so far to get to class. So happy that Kent State offers this option.

Emerging Leaders Is a Genius Idea

Kent state's emerging leaders program is a wonderful idea. Especially since I am majoring in business administration, being given the opportunity to receive a certificate for leadership training, as well as getting the chance to work with campus leaders and conduct leadership workshops during your second your is a great chance for a head start on one's career.

Facts

Traditions
  • Black Squirrel Festival: The Black Squirrel Festival is held in the Risman Plaza in front of the Kent Student Center to honor our squirrel intruders from the North. There are booths set up by most of the main organizations on campus. There are tons of freebies just waiting for the taking. There is also live music, great food, door prizes, merchandise, and just a fun atmosphere throughout the entire day. There is typically an after party where a movie is shown.
  • FlashFest: Every spring semester, Kent State hosts FlashFest, a festival complete with inflatable rides, activities, games, live music—typically featuring a major headlining band.
  • Halloween: Halloween is probably one of the most important “holidays” at Kent State. Students usually begin planning their costumes a year in advance so they can have the most creative costume. Students then wander down Main Street all dressed up, ducking in from party to party. There is typically a lot of drinking involved, but it’s definitely not a requirement to participate in the festivities.
  • Karaoke: Though not everyone participates in karaoke in the Rathskeller, those who do get really into it. There are over 10,000 songs to choose from, so just about any song you can think of is at your disposal. Weekly winners duke it out at the end of the semester to win a grand prize and the coveted title of “Karaoke Superstar.”
  • Portfolio: Every year, the fashion merchandising and design majors put on a fashion show called Portfolio, which showcases some of the best designs in the department. The show takes place in mid-April and is a very big deal on campus. Tickets sell out quick, so if you really want to go, get your tickets early.
Urban Legends
  • The black squirrels escaped from a secret research project on campus and started a colony at KSU.
  • The buildings were erected in such a way that makes the Kent State campus a giant wind tunnel.
  • There are laxitives in campus food.
