College Prowler Take
If you’re willing to sacrifice a bit of the convenience of on-campus housing for more cash in your wallet and complete independence, you will enjoy living off campus. There are rental properties everywhere, from houses to studio apartments. This option is only for those who are able to opt out of the housing requirement, either by credit hours or age. One of the most popular types of off-campus housing is a house or duplex, since you can cram more people in for some killer parties. Many of the places to rent are within walking distance of campus, or a very short drive. The good places sell out quickly, so you have to start your search as early as possible. It’s not such a problem in the apartments, which are dominated by the college crowd, but many students who live in houses often butt heads with the townies. Most have no problem calling the police if they have a problem with one of their neighbors’ parties. If you’re mellow with a good group of friends, you won’t have problems living off campus. There are just a handful of rowdy Kent Staters who tarnish the name of the rest of the student body. For the majority of upperclassmen, living off campus is the way to go.

Off-campus living is close to the campus and downtown. Some of the newer complexes are AMAZING, and have a pool, clubhouse, and come furnished, too! Houses are also a good way to go. Any way you look at it, off-campus housing is cheaper and usually nicer.

Living off campus is so much cheaper between not having a meal plan and splitting rent between people. You can save anywhere from $300 to $700. Most of the apartment complexes are relatively close and within reasonable walking distance when the weather is nice.

I don’t live off campus because I can literally wake up three minutes before class and be on time. That way, I don’t have to drive home when I’m dead tired or in bad weather, and I don’t have to fight for parking every day. |

Off-campus housing is an accident...
Off-campus housing is an accident waiting to happen. Eighteen-year-olds barely know how to drive, let alone manage a house. That little supervision for young students is not a good thing. It makes kids grow up fast, and not in the right way. |

I chose to live on campus, even when I didn’t have to, because it’s so much more convenient. You don’t have to worry about paying rent or utilities on time, and if you have a problem, you have the convenience of an RA to help you. |
