It is easy to lose sight of the fact that Kenyon is a great academic school. The people are so nice and the campus is so scenic that people often forget just how hard everyone is working. A former president said that the Kenyon atmosphere is like “learning in the company of friends.” There seems to be little competition, even within majors and departments, but everyone spends a lot of time learning. The traditional selling point of Kenyon College has been its English and Humanities program. Such esteemed writers as Robert Lowell and EL Doctorow were given their educations here, and Gambier is home to The Kenyon Review, one of the nations premier literary journals. English is by far the most populated major, and the scope of classes offered is far-reaching. However, we are expanding from our English focus. The science quad and other changes have helped to rope in a wide range of majors. The humanities offer many classes. Kenyon’s political science intro—The Quest for Justice—attracts many freshmen to the major, and the Integrated Program of Humane Studies (IPHS) gives first an overview of Western literature and philosophy and then narrows down to more specific movements, such as post-modernism or romanticism. History and classics also attract many students, and the anthropology and sociology majors are also very popular. Kenyon prides itself on its small classes and close student-professor relationships. Faculty at Kenyon place their emphasis on teaching, as opposed to research. Every professor is required to hold at least five office hours a week. Kenyon does get many big name, high-profile professors on campus, but they are not treated any differently. They too have small classes and make themselves available, even if they did write Eddie and the Cruisers.

Amazing
A+
Challenging, interesting classes in all departments (except American Studies and Sociology, the two easiest departments). Great professors who genuinely care about their students, with many being available almost 24/7. Intellectual atmosphere throughout campus (recently witnessed an argument between two frat boys about the morality behind British colonialism in the KAC weightroom).

I don’t think the academics at any institution could be that much better than what Kenyon has to offer. From the course selection to the teachers to the intimacy in the classroom, Kenyon’s classes are extremely productive and very personal. The students and teachers are familiar with one another because there are at most 15 students in most of my classes. I have incredible teachers in all of my classes, and if I don’t think that I understand a certain concept, the teachers are always available for further discussion. Fortunately, I was able to get every class I wanted for my freshman year. Due to the size of the classes, certain classes are going to be more difficult to gain a spot, but I’ve been lucky to this point. |

Political Science
A
While the vast majority of Kenyon's student body is liberal, including myself, Kenyon's Political Science department is well known its conservative leanings (ex. Straussian Political Philosophy). While this could be a source of tension, they overwhelmingly promote debate through completely understanding all sides of an issue. Professors David Leibowitz, Fred Baumann, and Pam Jensen are all outstanding. The Political Science department is widely regarded as one of Kenyon’s best departments.

It is fairly easy to get into introductory classes, but I wish that it was a little bit less selective and less hard to get into creative writing classes at Kenyon. And the English department is really well known. I think that English majors really have to work hard to get into courses they are interested in because there is a lot of demand. |

Overall, the academics are fantastic. Kenyon students often forget that, compared to 95 percent of colleges and universities, we have great teachers, challenging courses in a wide variety of subjects, and outstanding facilities. The faculty, though, differ from department to department, and are dedicated, available, and engaging. They are great people and a great resource. Sometimes, it can be difficult to get the classes you want, particularly in the larger departments or as a younger student, but it’s not a serious problem. |
