Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Kenyon is a place for writers, readers, artists, and academics, and this leaves little room for sports players or even sports spectators. Students attend games sporadically at best, and the teams’ abysmal records do little to draw fans. The only team that consistently wins is the swim Lords and Ladies. These teams have made it to nationals for more years than can be counted. Their winning streak is so expected that they plan the annual celebration, "Shock Your Mama," before heading off to nationals. Intramural leagues are alive and well, even without spectators. Students who played in high school but wanted a more academic experience in college relish the opportunity to show off their skills. In addition to the more mainstream IM sports, there are Quidditch and ultimate Frisbee teams, as well. These IM leagues can get very competitive, with rivalries building around dorm teams.

Though there isn’t much spectatorship, the athletic facilities are first-rate. The Kenyon Athletic Center (KAC), which opened in 2006, boasts 263,000 square feet of space filled with weight rooms, a swimming pool, yoga room, dance facilities, and much more. Students flock to the KAC to work out or take classes in Pilates or Zumba, all free of charge. On weekends, the Kenyon Film Society also shows movies in the KAC movie theater.

Amazing Facilities

When I visited I asked my interviewer(a current student) if he was going to attend homecoming...

"its homecoming?" he asked me. That sums up student support for the football games!!

The facilities are beautiful. The best of any school I've seen. They make me actually want to go workout.

It's Great to Be an Athlete at Kenyon

The school in general supports sports, but the athletes here are especially supportive of other teams. Our swim team is legendary, and we have a lot of really talented teams that are fun to watch. Also, in my opinion, we have one of the best athletic facilities in the country.

School Spirit

Kenyon students are insanely proud of their college, but they rarely have occasion to express this. There is a great understood sense of accomplishment in going to Kenyon. They take pride in their high academic environment and in the underlying trust and closeness of the Kenyon campus. Just because a person is not wearing white and purple does not mean they don’t feel this. There is a quasi-rivalry with some of the shinier but less academic schools in the area (Denison, Ohio Wesleyan), but this is usually expressed only through snide comments and the occasional field hockey match. Probably the best indicator of school spirit is the annual Summer Send-off, but the administration would never put it in the admissions booklet. Summer Send-off is a day-long party that the school throws the day before the start of finals in May. The entire campus comes together in the South Quad to drink, barbecue, play games, and generally celebrate being at Kenyon.

Getting Tickets

Tickets are free to students, and some games at McBride Field may be $1.
