Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Students are required to live on campus all four years of their college careers. This is so that the College can foster a sense of community, but it's also to keep the student population contained. The boundaries between the College and Gambier are blurry, and residents of the town often find themselves frustrated with student antics. Housing is assigned through a lottery system, with each student receiving points based on his or her class status. Students who have committed academic infractions, have lived in division housing, or have had problems with the judicial board can lose points. When students don't have “full points,” they are put at the end of their class when the lottery begins. Students with the most points choose housing first, but the majority of the lottery is luck.

Overall, the housing Kenyon offers is not great. There are only a few dorms that offer apartment-style living, kitchens, or private bathrooms. These amenities are available mostly to seniors and a few lucky juniors who have great lottery numbers. Most dorm rooms are doubles with shared bathrooms at the end of the hall. The facilities are clean, but the maintenance workers only clean public areas, so students are responsible for their own rooms. Campus housing is either regarded as North or South. South Campus is closer to the dining hall, classes, and parties. North Campus tends to be quieter and is much closer to the post office, bookstore, deli, and Middle Ground.

Freshman Housing Is Best Goes Downhill from There..

the lottery sucks, try to get a doctor's note and be given housing accommodation to choose your room. there's a big divide on campus between people who live south campus (beer drinking frat stars) and north campus (straight leg hipsters and gays). It all sounds awesome and surreal to you right now but it's not quite so cool when you're living it and you're not really either.

Housing Is Guaranteed

The nice thing about Kenyon's housing program is that every student is guaranteed to have a place to live on campus. Kenyon has some of the best examples of collegiate-style gothic architecture in the country, and the dorm Old Kenyon was build in 1827, making it the oldest building on campus. This creates a unique living experience for students, as there is a section of campus with "historic dorms" and a section of campus with newer living spaces. I prefer the older dorms. However, since they are so old, aren't flashy on the inside. They have wireless, electricity, and up-to-date plumbing, but they definitely have an "old" feel. The options for off-campus housing are slim, but Kenyon does have a variety of different options, including apartments, that feel like they are off campus.

Variety Is the Spice of Life

While all Freshmen live on the Freshmen quad, there are options for upperclassmen for every taste and budget, from traditional residence halls to more independent living style apartments geared towards seniors.
