Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The steep tuition at Kenyon means that most students who can afford to attend can afford to bring their own laptop to campus. By far, most students choose to bring Macs, even though support services on campus exist primarily for PCs. Because most students bring laptops to campus, the wireless network is the primary Internet source. Dorm rooms are equipped with an Ethernet port and cable, but the port is turned off unless you notify IT that you would like to use it. The drain on the network can make computing slow during peak hours—usually from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m.

For those without laptops or those who choose not to cart them around campus, there are several computer labs. The main labs in the library tend to fill, just as classes are getting out between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m., and then empty around dinnertime. Other labs—such as those in the dining hall basement or on the science quad—are your best bet during peak hours, since most students don’t realize these exist.

Labs Are Accessible and up to Date

The computers at Kenyon College are consistently in use throughout the semester, especially during midterms and finals. However, enough students have personal laptops, with accessible WiFi throughout campus, that it's not much of a problem. The only competition is with printers, but that's mostly a "I waited until the last minute to print my paper" sort of problem.
