Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Admissions might hate to admit it, but Kenyon's social life is still largely dominated by the Greek system. Greeks have the most money and biggest lounges and lodges, and as a result, they are able to throw the biggest parties attracting the largest numbers of people. In many other ways, the Kenyon Greek scene is anything but typical. Unlike bigger universities, the Greek life is concentrated on campus. There isn't an abundance of off-campus locations for parties, making them more accessible to non-Greek students. Since it makes no sense confining parties just to members, most Greek bashes are open to anyone who would like to come. Invitations are put in people’s rooms, but that's more to promote the event than to ensure exclusivity.

The rush system also works in a very unique way. First semester, fraternities do not throw any rush events. During this time, frats do everything they can do to get unofficially noticed. There are many parties aimed at freshmen, and individual members also scout prospective pledges. By the time January rolls around, most fraternities have a good idea of who will at least be rushing, but there are always some surprises when it comes time to pledge. The advantage of having a Greek-free first semester is that students build their own friends without the crutch of fraternities or sororities. This way, they always remain connected to the larger college community.

Fine

Greeks will host parties but they are open to everyone. Greek life is neither frowned upon nor is it commended.

Greek life not recommended

Waste of time and money. Alcohol/Drugs are priority #1. Only stick to themselves. Resent the rest of the student population, many of whom are just trying to mind their own business. Sure they throw sweaty parties that blast terrible music, but what's so great about that.

Yeah this is an over-generalization and there are many genuinely good people in the greek system but I think greek life in general is self-indulgent. This school costs 50 grand a year and most of these kids spend their time getting wasted and talking about hot chicks.

Greeks Throw Most Parties

Greeks live together in "division" housing, dorm rooms grouped together in the residence halls on the south quad. In other words, they are integrated with the rest of the non-Greek students. There isn't much commingling between Greeks and non-Greeks in those dorms, though, except during parties.

Greeks throw most of the parties at Kenyon. They are either in the lounges of Old Kenyon or at the fraternity's house/lodge. The parties are usually open to the whole campus, so there isn't a lot of pressure to join a fraternity or sorority just to go to parties.

Professors generally look down on the fraternities and sororities at Kenyon. The psychology department especially seems to go out of their way to try to demean the Greek reputation. That being said, a large population of Greeks score well above the average GPA at Kenyon.

Without Greek life at Kenyon, there would not be much of a social scene.
