Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Kenyon's location means that security is not a major concern. Academic buildings remain unlocked until after 11 p.m., and the library does the same. Dorms now have keycard access 24/7, due to an unfortunate crime spree in 2010, but for the most part, students leave their individual rooms unlocked. During move-in, there are usually a few thefts, but these appear to be localized incidents. Security officers are on campus mostly to monitor party safety. They check large gatherings for alcohol and try to keep underage drinking to a minimum. By day, officers ride around campus in their golf carts helping transport injured students to class. On party nights—usually Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays—security officers patrol the dorms for noise violations. The nice thing is that security truly does care about the students, and the team tries to keep everyone safe while allowing the students to have fun.

Gambier is so small that it doesn’t have any dark alleys or bad neighborhoods. There are places on campus that lack safety lights, but security offers escorts across campus for anyone who feels unsafe after dark.

Very Safe

There is nothing to worry about on Kenyon's campus. We are up on an isolated hill, and our town only has a few thousand people, so there aren't too many people to bother us. Sometimes there is a crazy murderer on campus (true story- Spring 2011) from the town nearby, but that only happens every once in a while, and security responds with lightening speed!

Never Felt Safer

I haven't ever felt unsafe at Kenyon, in Gambier, or in the surrounding countryside. Campus Safety is always more than willing to come help you out, and even when there were emergencies they were well-prepared with plans and with getting information across campus. With parties, Campus Safety generally will just tell you to pour out your drinks if you're underage- but don't hassle them, they really don't like that. They're here to help you and everyone else.

It's Alright

I have never felt unsafe on campus - but that's not to say that we couldn't use a few upgrades on the security system. The police are fat, generally annoying, and they act like they don't really care about your safety as much as they care about shutting down parties and giving you parking tickets. We had a scary lock down last year which was fairly terrible. The suspect was actually IN the bookstore, and this was before the campus was locked down anyway. The paths are not well lit and the security team is not very friendly; they make it clear they're not there to help, they're there to make your life difficult.
