College Prowler Take

The major party nights at Kenyon are Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, but if a person really wants to go out, there is usually some small gathering to attend. Fraternities usually invite their friends over for informal drinking during the week, and most students who opt out of the big parties will either stay in or hang out in one of the upperclass apartments. These are again usually confined to groups of friends hanging out, but the larger size and relative lack of security in these areas makes them conducive to casual partying. One of the few things that Kenyon might have in common with OSU is our love for drinking games. Because Kenyon lacks a bar scene or student union, we use these games as a way to bond. Many close friendships have been given their start over a Beirut table. Security’s recent crackdown on these games served more as a validation than a deterrent. All we have to do is play a little more quietly.

For those who actually are of age, there are only three places to exercise your over-21 privileges: the Village Inn, the Pub, and the Gambier Grill, unofficially and more commonly known as “the Cove.” The Village Inn draws a large crowd when there is live music available, but the Cove remains the most popular among the upperclassmen—perhaps more out of tradition than for its ambiance. The bar itself is a windowless room with dark concrete walls, decorated only by random street signs and beer placards. It doesn’t bug most students. “It’s just where we go,” one might say. An occasional trip to Mount Vernon will suffice if you get bored of the on campus options, with Fiesta being one of the most popular bars and restaurants in the area.

Most Parties Revolve Around Frats

B+

The vast majority of parties at Kenyon are thrown by frats. Period. In addition to the huge keg/dance parties, usually held in the fraternity lounges in Old Kenyon, frats have many smaller, but still parties. The best party spots on and off campus are fraternity-affiliated: DKE and AD bullseyes and lounges, DPhi duplex, Beta/Delt lodges etc. Anyone is allowed into the bigger frat parties, and the smaller ones are pretty open as well.

The nightlife at Kenyon, if you...

The nightlife at Kenyon, if you like frat parties, is passable, or so I’ve heard. If you enjoy hanging out with friends, it’s nirvana. There is enough to do if you don’t need fast-paced big city life. The Grill is sufficient, except for its distinct resemblance to a nasty basement. I personally am for the abolition of fraternities on campus, so I can’t really comment on frat parties.

You don’t have to participate in the party scene, but it is hard to ignore. There are all kinds of parties, though. There are beer-soaked keg affairs, semi-formal invite soirees, and the more colorful affair: cross-dress debutante balls, mustache parties, short shorts parties, and sweaty, ‘80s post-punk disco dance happenings.

There’s enough to do if you’re ready to go and find it. There are always coffeehouses with musicians on the weekends, along with movies that some people like to go to. And of course, there are your frat parties, which are more like dances in the lounges, and then there are the nights where you just hang out with your friends in your dorm.

Bar Listings

Banana Joe’s is a local club—almost. The bar features a happy hour on Fridays, a karaoke night, and a dance floor. Even so, Banana Joe’s is usually an older hang-out, and Kenyon students usually tire of the scene pretty quickly.

Banana Joe’s

100 W. High St.

Mount Vernon

(740) 392-7400

Fiesta’s offers beer and margaritas, and that’s about it—they’re mostly a food service establishment, but the bar does get busy on weekend nights.

Fiesta Mexicana

308 W. High St.

(740) 397-6325

Flappers is both a bar and restaurant. Students who love live music flock here to catch local and cover bands.

Flappers Bar and Grill

15 W. High St.

(740) 392-1061

Gambier Grill is an on-campus restaurant and bar where students cannot use their meal plans, but that doesn’t stop them from spending all of their free time (or free cash) there. This is probably the biggest Kenyon hangout, as far as the bar scene goes.

Gambier Grill & Pizza

100 E. Brooklyn St.

Gambier

What to Do if You're Not 21

Because of Kenyon’s location, what to do under or over 21 is limited to mostly on-campus activities. There are always events being held, parties to attend, or sporting events to participate in or go see.
