College Prowler Take

Kenyon is about as non-threatening as a school can get. Dorms and academic buildings stay unlocked, requiring card access only after midnight on weekdays and after 2 a.m. on weekends, and people leave their backpacks unattended for hours at the library. Kenyon is an incredibly safe and trusting environment. The thefts that do happen are almost impossible to trace because they are a product of trust. People steal unlocked bikes, food in community refrigerators, and shoes from unlocked lockers.

Security is there mostly as party monitors. They check to make sure underage students aren’t drinking, and that everything is up to fire code. During the day, they can be seen riding around campus in their SUVs (or golf carts, weather permitting), but there is not much for them to do. Party nights, they go through dorms and check on loud rooms, but a little common sense (no blasting music and no one screaming “I’m so drunk!”) will ensure that you stay out of trouble in this respect. Security truly does care about the students. Being a 2,000-person village, Gambier doesn’t really have any dark alleys or bad neighborhoods. Some of campus is poorly lit, but blue-security phones are visible in all the less populated areas. Most of the people that hang out around Kenyon are Kenyon students.

I started out as a freshman feeling as if security was always out to get me. Whether or not I was throwing a party in my room or going to a party, I always felt as if they were the enemy. As I have gone on and now am a senior, I appreciate their role; I realize they are not out to get us. They have done a lot for the school, and at least 90 percent of the time, they care about the good of the students.

Safety and security seem to be sort of malicious. They don’t act like they’re here for our safety. They act like they’re bitter and want to get people in trouble because they can.

The campus at large is very safe, and although lighting is a concern, most girls, I believe, feel comfortable walking alone at night.

I’m not too familiar with the safety and security department, but I do know they’ve always been there whenever our fire alarm has gone off (around 15 times in two months), and they are always efficient with towing cars when you leave your car alone for too long. Fortunately, I’m not too familiar with the safety and security personnel, but I did go on the campus lighting walk, which I think is an incredible idea. An electrician, a couple security officers, and students walked around the campus finding areas that were too dark. So far, I’m satisfied, and from what I’ve heard from the lighting walk, there are plenty of safety projects that will make the students feel even more comfortable, which is never a concern anyway.

Safety and security crack down a lot on parties, but I don’t think they’re too strict. You can always call them for a ride home, and people take advantage of that, which is good. (They don’t always do that at other schools.)
