Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Athletics at La Roche are not well followed by the majority of the student body. Although the College offers a variety of varsity sports, most students can’t seem to be bothered with attending games and other events. The lack of fans is unfortunate for the athletes, who get little or no support at their games. On average, there are only a handful of students in attendance at sporting events on campus. However, students who do attend games usually have a good time. Admission is free, and the most of the teams are pretty good.

At basketball games, students are encouraged to sit in the “Hawk’s Nest,” the student cheering section, but most of the
cheering is done by the cheerleaders. In general, the College has very little school spirit. This could be because there isn’t
a football team at La Roche, which is frowned upon in a city where football is the most prevalent sport. Or perhaps it is
because there is little or no advertisement of the sporting events on campus. Or maybe it’s just because La Roche is a
small school, and the games are never televised or considered high in rank. Since La Roche is an artsy school, most students who have an interest in sports actually play the sports they like, leaving plenty of room in the stands. Whatever the
reason, the athletics here are lacking in number and fans.

Basketball Is King

Basketball is by far the most popular sport at LRC. The team is usually a contender and is relatively well-followed by most. For years, the team was guided by Coach Lang, who went above and beyond as both a coach and a character builder. He passed away unexpectedly in 2010 but will forever be remembered as one of the best in the business.

The school also has baseball, soccer, volleyball, and a few other teams. There is no football team. Although there are plenty of varsity sports, intramurals are nearly impossible to come by. The school used to offer an elective course in basketball but it disappeared in recent years.

There is one gym on campus, shared by athletes and non-athletes. It may not be large, but it offers just about anything you could want, from free weights and machines (for lifters) to cardio machines (a few each of bikes, treadmills, and ellipticals). A large portion of the campus works out; you'll almost always find folks you know when you hit the gym. There are no fees involved and the gym is open exclusively to LRC students and faculty. If you like to run, there is an indoor track. Sadly, the school does not offer a pool.

Athletic facilities are either directly on campus or adjacent to it (in the case of the soccer field and baseball fields). They're pretty comparable to a mid-size high school in terms of seating.

The jocks think they are so much...

The jocks think they are so much better than everyone, and that’s funny because they suck at sports.

Most Popular Sports

Soccer, baseball, and basketball are the most popular.

Most Overlooked Teams

The roller hockey team is the newest addition to the La Roche athletic scene, so not many people know about them.

School Spirit

The words “school spirit” hardly exist at La Roche. Not many care about the College’s sports except for the athletes and their closest friends, so don’t expect people to be cheering too loudly. Lots of students do attend school dances or contests to win prizes, though. They also like to wear La Roche T-shirts and hoodies from the bookstore to class.

Getting Tickets

Most sporting events are free and aren’t usually very crowded.

Best Place to Take a Walk

There is a trail that runs behind the baseball and soccer fields that is a wonderful place to take a walk when the weather is nice.
