Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Most La Roche students have their own computers, which could be due to the fact that the technology offered in
the computer labs is obsolete. The College systems use Microsoft Windows XP but have hardware that can barely
run any programs. Plus, the machines are so abused by students that they have become virtually useless after only
a few years of use. The labs are usually full of students frantically fighting over the computers that actually function. There are about 200 computers available for student use on campus, but only about 100 work properly. Also, the temperature in the computer labs always seems to be about 20 degrees higher than normal room temperature, causing a hot and humid environment that is hard to concentrate in.

La Roche’s East Campus is where most of the academic classes take place. Typically, design students use the Macintosh computer labs in the basement of the Wright Library, and the academic students use the general lab in the library. Although there are no written rules about who can use which lab, the Mac lab monitors seem to give nondesign
students somewhat of a hard time if they try to use a computer there. This is especially frustrating when the general computer lab is full. The verdict? Bring your own computer to La Roche.

Bring Your Own Laptop, Unless You Like the Heat!

Most of the time you can find a seat in the computer labs because most students have laptops to do work. Labs can be packed during mid-terms or finals when students need to print a lot. The labs are usually warm, moreso when it's crowded, so don't wear thick clothing. Dorms have wifi too, but the signal is sporatic.

I don’t see too many Macs in the labs. If you don’t like Windows, that may be a problem.
