Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Since La Roche is a relatively new institution (founded in 1963), the facilities are all fairly modern. The residence halls are kept clean, even over the summers, so they feel brand new at the beginning of each fall semester. The library is in good condition, but the lack of updated books makes it less appealing to students in search of information. The gymnasium is in excellent condition and has new locker rooms and a beautiful hardwood floor. The weight rooms are tidy, but a lot of the machines are broken or missing pieces that the College cannot afford to replace. The academic building is nicely equipped with computers in each classroom and a projector in every room. The computer lab has many computers with updated operating systems. The cafeteria is spacious and clean.

The major complaint students have about the facilities is that they are not open during hours that accommodate some
people’s schedules. The cafeteria is only open a few hours during each meal time, making it difficult for students to
fit in three meals a day around hectic class schedules. The gym opens early in the morning but is often unavailable to
students who are not on sports teams because of ongoing events and practices. But aside from this, the students seem
to be extremely satisfied with the facilities and buildings on this beautiful, suburban campus.

Very Nice Modern Facilities

The facilities here at La Roche College are very modernized..since the college is still considered kind of new..compared to other colleges. Founded in 1963, the oldest building is the Wright Library..which was built in 1963 and renovated in the Summer of 2010. The newest being Bold Hall 2..an extension wing to Bold Hall 1..one of the 4 residence halls on campus. All the classroom buildings are updated with the latest technology and smart classrooms in the buildings with smart boards in the rooms. The College Center Square, the main student union center, is a popular gathering place among many students. The Cantalops Dinning Hall, which is the only cafeteria on campus, and the Redhawk Cafe, the take out cafe for those who want a quick snack, have both been recently renovated also during the Summer of 2010. The Kerr Fitness and Sports Center, built in 1993 and renovated during the Summer of 2011, offers the newest training equitment, a weight room, indoor running track above the gym, and the gym itself, used for hosting various events starting from Academic Orientation, to sporting events through out the year, and ending with Commencement. The dorms are spacious with bathrooms in each room. Overall, the facilities on campus are very nice and attractive to visitors, prospective students, and current students and staff. Since the academic buildings are all connected, LRC can, in some ways, give off an high school like atmosphere since all the classes are under one roof and the dorms and gym are very close by, so you never have to walk too far especially in cold weather. LRC is a great place for those who are looking at a very small college with small class sizes.

Mostly Good

I'll tackle these one at a time:

Library: Renovated in 2010, the library is one of the school's strengths. They have a good selection of periodicals, access to several online databases, a decent selection of books, and tons of study space (both quiet areas and public areas for group review). The librarians are all very helpful. They could use more computers in the library, so if you have a laptop, bring it with you. If you can't find a book at the college library, there is a public library about a mile up the road, which is quite large.

Gym: The workout area isn't huge, but it has pretty much any weight training equipment (free weights and machines) and cardio machine you could want. It's free of charge to use and is extremely popular. There's an indoor track but no pool. The basketball court, soccer field, and baseball field are open to anyone as long as there isn't a game or practice going on.

Student Center: The largest common area is directly outside the cafeteria and take out restaurant. They have a few tables, booths, and couches. The area really isn't that big and is difficult to use as a commons if there is something going on there. Students are permitted to use the piano in this area. There had been a chess set, but I didn't see it there on my last visit. There is a single television in this area which often goes unwatched.

Chapel: The chapel on campus is nice, but if you're not Roman Catholic, you're going to feel pretty much out of place. The school does offer mass and has its own campus minister.

Computer Labs: These have long been a weakness of the school. The machines are frequently broken, the labs themselves have climate control issues, and overcrowding in the labs is extremely common. If you know your way around you can find an alternate lab to use (provided it's not occupied by a class). Most labs have Windows PCs (there is one with Macs) loaded with MS Office and programs used in classes.

Aesthetics: I attended LRC for five years and saw a dramatic improvement in this area over my time there. The school genuinely cares about its upkeep and has made huge strides in beautifying the campus. It may not be all that interesting from an architectural standpoint, but you'll find a few visual delights if you take a walk around campus.

Favorite Things To Do

Every fall, La Roche hosts the Gateway Clipper Cruise, a dance held on a Gateway Clipper Fleet boat. The cruise is usually from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. and takes students from one end of Pittsburgh to the other and back again while they enjoy music from a DJ and refreshments on the boat.
Second semester, the main event is Spring Fling. This dance is usually held at a hotel or large banquet hall. Other fun College sponsored activities include a Battle of the Bands, trips to see plays and musicals Downtown, and sporting events.

Since La Roche is located in a suburban area, on-campus activities are especially important when building a sense of community. Weekly events like karaoke and bingo are held at the college center, and regular sporting events take place in the gym. In addition, different clubs and organizations host
dances, special day-long events, forums, trips, and movie showings.
