Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

La Roche prides itself on the fact that it was voted one of the safest four-year colleges in the United States by the
APBnews.com/CAP Index study. And it’s true—the crime scene at LRC seems to be almost nonexistent. The major
problem with public safety here lies in the officers’ lack of enthusiasm when responding to students’ calls. If a student is
locked out of his or her room and calls security for help, that student can expect at least a 20-minute wait. On a campus
with only five major buildings, that seems excessive. Another problem on campus is the dim lighting in the parking lots
and along walkways at night. Although the school is located in a generally safe area of the city, it needs better lighting at
night, according to a majority of the student body. The few crimes that do occur at the College are relatively
minor and include car break-ins, fights, and alcohol-related situations like mild violence or unwanted sexual contact. But despite the security officers’ slow response time to students’ phone calls and the dim external lighting on campus, no major crimes have been committed here. The new e2campus security is nice because every student can get text messages instantly. The lack of crime coupled with the suburban atmosphere provide La Roche students with an overall feeling of safety.

Pretty Safe Atmosphere

La Roche College, due to its location in the suburbs of northern Pittsburgh, is pretty low-key when it comes to campus crime and security measures. The security guards can often be found smoking in the gazebo with the students at night, or just wandering around talking to people. This is to be expected though, when there isn't much "going on" around campus. Overall, I've never felt unsafe walking around on campus to and from classes, even in the evening times. The dorm buildings can only be accessed by swipe cards after business hours, as some offices are located on the second floor of dorm buildings.

I think students feel safe here. I do. Nothing bad ever really happens. Since everyone knows everyone else’s business, it’s hard to get away with things.
