Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • A rule in the dorms states people of the opposite sex cannot be in one another’s rooms after 2 a.m. This rule is broken often and is not strictly enforced
  • Anything you say and do on campus can and will be known by everyone the following day. Don’t get drunk and profess your undying love for someone—they’ll know and so will the rest of the campus.
  • Campus security guards take an overly long amount of time responding to calls.
  • La Roche is not authorized to tow cars.
  • There is a no-sex-on-campus policy. If you’re caught having sex, you can be kicked off campus.
  • Walls in the dorm buildings are thin, and you can hear anything that happens in the room next to you.
Tips to Succeed
  • Be courteous and kind to all of your professors. Chances are good that you’ll have them at least one more time.
  • Don’t schedule a ton of morning classes. You may start out strong, but as the semester goes on, you’ll want to sleep in more and more.
  • Enjoy yourself. Take time to attend college activities and parties and meet people. Don’t overwork yourself or take things too seriously—that’s what the years after college are for.

Location and Individualized Attention

First, the location. LRC is in a very safe suburban area of Pittsburgh. There are plenty of nearby businesses including several banks, large grocery stores, pretty much any pharmacy chain imaginable, a very nice mall, and a few decent restaurants. If you get sick, LRC is next door to a well-known hospital (the ER isn't great but the care is pretty good overall once you're admitted). For student teachers, LRC is in the heart of a very good area for schools. Downtown Pittsburgh is close by as well and is easy enough to access. It's home to some great museums, a beautiful baseball stadium, and if you're into theater, plenty of play venues. You'll need a car to get most places; the campus is surrounded by busy roads not fit for pedestrians (plus most businesses are a decent distance from campus). There are some public buses as well.

Second, the school is known for individualized attention. If you went to a AAA-size high school or larger, you'll probably find the school to be smaller than your high school was. Unlike the big schools, you actually get to interact with professors and classmates instead of sitting through long lectures in an auditorium. Be sure to seek out the professors if you have any problems, as they are always willing to help!

Facts

Traditions
  • The Booze Cruise: Near the beginning of every fall semester, La Roche hosts a dance cruise on the Gateway Clipper Fleet. This is affectionately called the Booze Cruise due to the amount of students who drink before, during, and after the dance.
  • The Byham Performance: Each April, the Dance Department brings the best of its repertoire to the Byham Theatre downtown in the Cultural District. Tickets are free to students.
  • Festival of Lights: At the beginning of each December, the annual light-up night festival is held. At this festival, the campus Christmas decorations are lit, and food booths and craft vendors are all over campus. The night ends with a lovely display of fireworks
  • The Spring Fling: Much like the Booze Cruise, the Spring Fling is a dance held by La Roche at a local hotel. This happens in the spring, usually in the middle of the semester.
Urban Legends
  • A nun drowned in the motherhouse lake.
  • The ghost of a former student haunts Mahler hall
