Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Some colleges have the right idea by not letting freshmen have cars on campus. Unfortunately, La Roche does not have a rule like that, and the parking lots are always full to the brim and overflowing with cars at all hours of the day and night. The most common student resolution to this is that the College should stop letting freshmen have cars. Students who have cars, especially commuters, usually have to make a mad dash for class—because they either have to park in a place they’re not allowed or really far away due to the high volume of student and faculty cars. Sometimes a student should just suck it up before that busy 11 a.m. class time and park behind the gym because the commuter lot will undoubtedly be full. There are spaces to park; however, it is a small campus and parking “far away” isn’t actually that far away compared to a larger campus.

Another major problem regarding La Roche parking is the deteriorating condition of the lots. Students are forced to drive on pavement that is full of potholes and cracks, and therefore, they are not strangers to flat tires and bad wheel alignments. The College would really benefit from a makeover of its parking facilities. The poor condition of the lots and lack of spaces turn many prospective—and current—students away from the otherwise nicely maintained campus.

The Worst Aspect of Campus

The parking is free, but that's about where the virtues end. Many people park in the wrong lot; there seems to be a lack of enforcement for this. The lot gets full very quickly during peak hours and the alternative locations are either off limits to certain individuals or full themselves. It's best to come early and wait for class to start if you can. Nobody pays attention to the one way signs and while I have yet to see an actual accident, there have been too many near-misses for comfort. A two-tiered parking deck with extra enforcement would greatly help. The addition of spaces exclusively for compact cars (popular on campus) would also help to increase the number of spaces.

Our parking is adequate. Until we get more students or parking becomes a major problem, I don’t think we should change it.
