Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Lafayette has a few dining options. Dining halls are open seven days a week, although every dining option has its own hours. The Farinon dining hall (commonly called “Upper” on campus) is open most days from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Students also have the option of going to the Farinon snack bar (also known as “Lower”), Gilbert’s, Simon’s, and the Skillman Café. The Marquis dining hall serves a buffet of family-style meals. Upper Farinon has different stations set up throughout the dining hall, from sandwich stations to a cereal and bagel bar. Students can either use their ID cards or cash/credit to purchase meals. Most students are on a meal plan, ranging from the full “20 meals per week” plan to a block plan. Otherwise, breakfast at the dining halls costs $6 with lunch/dinner costing around $13. In this regard, the food is somewhat overpriced, considering the quality that is served. Although most students will not complain about the variety of dining hall menus, a lot of students have commented on how “everything starts to taste the same.” For this reason, many students opt out of meal plans all together and cook on their own.

Certain dining facilities are crowded, depending on the time of the day. Lunch hour is especially hectic at Marquis and Farinon. Later in the day (and into the evening), café-style eateries like Gilbert’s and Simon’s can often have lines that wrap around the corner of the building. Students flock to the nachos and the smoothies, and the sandwiches and salads. However, students with special dietary needs/restrictions may find it challenging to find dining options palatable to their tastes. Although most dining halls do have a vegan/vegetarian option, these selections are usually quite limited. Gluten- and lactose-intolerant students have frequently expressed frustration at the lack of services catering to their specific needs.

Junk Food Vs. Healthy

Lafayette is trying to make their food more healthy, they have stopped solely producing hamburgers and hotdogs, but if you want this food you're still in luck. They have a really nice salad bar, and are finally adding healthy breakfast options like flaxseed muffins, cottage cheese, and fruit. They are improving but aren't quite there yet so I give them a B+.

Its What Youd Expect

My biggest complaint would be a lack of consistent healthy options. If your into burgers and fries then Laf is the place for you. The variety's not too bad, and there's an occasional diamond in the rough - the tuna tatar they made twice last year was phenomenal.

Alright. Could Be Better. but It Could Be Worse

Simon's and Gilberts are good on occasion. But the main dining halls are hit or miss and get tiresome. Hope you like WaWa.
