College Prowler Take

Lafayette food—what is there to say? After four years of it, students are ready to return to more appetizing options. There are two main dining halls, Marquis and Farinon. Though Marquis has long been thought the better of the two, Farinon has taken first place in freshmen hearts since recent renovations. Upstairs Farinon has the staples of burgers, pizza, sandwiches, and salad, but the new grill puts out a delicious meal every night. Marquis is a favorite as well, with more ethnic options for students. Marquis remains buffet-style, while Farinon is now less self-serve, but leaves availability for seconds—or thirds and fourths.

Students always crowd around what is known as lower, or downstairs, Farinon. It offers pizza, soups, salad, wraps, and breakfast food at all hours. Gilbert’s is crowded any night of the week with its popular smoothies, fries, and more. It’s open almost all day and serves not only as a place to eat, but a place to hang and study. The back room of Gilbert’s features a huge TV and comfy couches, while the front has a small TV with the same lounge furniture, adding a cozy atmosphere. Simon’s has quickly become the favorite place to stop late at night for their sandwiches. It recently started the student special—a student designs a sandwich that becomes available to order each week. Though students may complain, compared to other small colleges, Lafayette is as good as, if not better, than most.

Gilbert’s is a nice place to grab a snack and coffee with friends; the other food on campus is decent for college food. Marquis dinners tend to taste a little better than Farinon, but that’s because they’re covered in butter and seasonings. The college does offer a wide variety of foods to choose from, and deserts are always good.

Sorry, but you have to be pretty creative after a while with the food assortment. Sometimes, I can become very angry with the dining facilities because they never seem to serve their best food options, like those delicious waffle fries, or the turkey, or eggplant. However, Marquis definitely can have some good choices, like the pancake bar. And can we forget about Gilbert’s cheese fries and a smoothie?

The food is good. It starts off better, but there is a tendency to get sick of it after a semester. I like Marquis better because I find more variety and flexibility there. They have a lot of ‘make your own’ options where you get the chance to eat exactly what you want.

On-campus food is uniformly mediocre and repetitive. Get off the meal plan. Here's a tip: If you say you’re vegan, you’ll get off with no penalty. Eating out or cooking it yourself is cheaper and better.

The food is okay. However, it is extremely expensive if you do not have a meal plan (just flex). Gilbert’s is a great spot for meeting friends and getting late-night food.
