Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

One of Lafayette’s perks is that it guarantees on-campus housing all four years. First-year students fill out a housing survey over the spring of their senior year in high school; the Office of Residence Life then tries to match up students with their housing and/or roommate preferences. Some residence halls are designated for freshmen and sophomores; Conway, for example, has traditionally been a first-year dorm. Some of the older buildings, like Ruef and Marquis, are also mostly inhabited by freshmen and sophomores. Other dorms have mixed floors, with students ranging from freshmen to seniors. Dorms can also be coed by room or by floor, and special accommodations can be made for students who have specific housing preferences.

Starting sophomore year, students have more freedom when it comes to where they want to live. They can live in general dorms or in special-interest housing—a feature of on-campus residence that gives students the option to live with peers who share a common interest, like Caribbean culture, environmental sustainability, or US history. Most dorms—especially the newer ones, like Keefe, Rubin, and Fisher halls—are well maintained, adequately spacious, and clean. Older dorms, like Gates and McKeen, can lack amenities, like central air conditioning and walk-in closets. Students get the opportunity to get to know their floormates through floor programs and other social events. A commonly-held mantra on campus is that no two buildings are more than 10 minutes apart. Although some academic buildings/residence halls can be removed from the general hub of campus, distance is not unmanageable. During particularly bad weather, the College may declare a day off, if the walkways are blocked or certain stairways are made inaccessible by snow.

Living on Campus

Living on campus is nice for the most part. Everything is close together, and I especially like the nicer dorms down the hill. The social atmosphere is pretty good considering there's really nothing in the area that's terribly exciting. The only bad thing about living on campus is that during the winter, ice is not cleaned off from sidewalks very well, making it easy to slip and fall.

Pretty Good

Dorm life at Lafayette isn't the greatest, but I do like it a lot. Lafayette is well accommodating to people of all interests, and is host to freshman-only spaces, wellness dorms, special interest houses, fraternity and sorority housing and honors housing. We have everything from typical dorms to suite style housing. The facilities aren't always the best, but I would say that we are above average compared to most places.

Homey

It's so much different from High School. When you are in High school, you have two different lives, your school life, and the one at home. When you live on camus, they both become one. It's easy to become lazy because it's all so chill. However, at the same time, it is easy to focus in class because you can always easily find omeone to stufy with you and help you out.
