Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The three days of freshman orientation will vigorously attempt to drive this point home: don't drink if you're underage. First-year students will sit through various lectures that will spell out for them the consequences of underage drinking. From alcohol poisoning to sexual assault to legal action, underage drinking is a misdemeanor that the College claims will be strictly dealt with. That being said, the strictness of College policies still does not deter underage drinkers from procuring alcohol. Students, regardless of age, will usually succeed in attempting to get alcohol.

The campus police are particularly vigilant on the weekends. Public Safety vehicles can be seen doing rounds around the quad and the Greek houses—the most common places of belligerent behavior and/or underage drinking. If apprehended, students are written up and reported to the weekly crime log. There are instances where parents are called and students are asked to leave campus, but these are rare occasions. Aside from the policies dealing with underage drinking, the College is not particularly strict when it comes to monitoring student activity. Resident advisers, as emissaries of the Office of Residence Life, have the responsibility of maintaining "quiet hours" on their halls and ensuring that students are following community standards. RAs on duty also have the authority to write up suspicious/belligerent behavior.

School Policies

Lafayette is not very strict in terms of students' social lives. They want you to enjoy your time at here, and they try to plan fun events so that students are always engaged. The punishments are not so severe if you do harmless things. But it's easy to get in trouble for drinking underage, or doing drugs.

Somewhat Strict

Public Safety can either be a menace to the drinkers and partiers or lazy and half-hearted in their attempts to eliminate crime. Depends on what kind of day they're having.

It's Fair.

There are rules about drinking, which makes sense considering most of us are underage and therefore it's illegal. The college is pretty reasonable about 'looking the other way' though. If you don't make a fuss, I mean, if you're not belligerent and/or loud, you'll probably be okay. Plus the school has a great policy about issues involving alcohol. If someone drinks way too much, and needs medical attention, or you think they do, you can call Public Safety and make a "Good Samaritan" report. No one gets in trouble for drinking and the kid will get the help he needs. It's not used often, for the most part kids are smart about what they drink and how much of it.
