The three days of freshman orientation focus heavily on the College’s policy on underage drinking and drug use. That being said, it is not very difficult to procure alcohol and certain drugs on campus. Alcohol is prevalent, especially on the weekends. Most fraternities and off-campus houses (especially the sports houses) host parties that are typically exclusive, with plenty of beer and other alcohol. Students can ask their upperclassman friends to buy alcohol for them or find other means of procuring it. On the weekends—and during certain times of the year, like Homecoming and Rivalry Week—students can be seen on the quad and on March Field in various states of drunkenness. Public Safety always patrols these events and tries to apprehend underage drinkers, but most get away.
Certain social environments do call for drugs and alcohol more than others. Especially at off-campus houses, drug and alcohol use is almost expected. However, Public Safety has raided these parties on various occasions, and in instances where underage drinking was discovered, they shut down or suspended the aforementioned houses. Many fraternities have been removed from campus specifically because of the drinking culture they promoted, and the College is now considering getting rid of Greek life altogether because of how it is presumed to be detrimental to academic pursuits.
