Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The average student at Lafayette College usually hails from the East Coast/New England states. Quite a large portion of the student body comes from money, and that is reflected in the way students present themselves. There are a lot of fashion-conscious people on campus, guys and girls who put effort into the clothes they wear. It is not unusual to see girls impeccably put together, and guys in collared shirts and pressed khakis. Even in this flawlessly-attired crowd, you can expect to find the more casually dressed people. They go to class in sweatshirts and sweatpants, ponytails and scruffy beards. They mingle with each other, go to classes and the library, and attend parties on the weekends. They rub shoulders with Greek life—which may have the label of “exclusivity” in most college vernaculars—and have social lives beyond their on-campus jobs and double majors.

Most students come to campus with some knowledge of how to maneuver the dating scene. The guy-to-girl ratio is pretty equal, and there are plenty of opportunities to meet eligible singles. Floor events, dorm parties, Greek life events—the campus offers a wide range of social activities where guys and girls can get to know each other. Casual sex is not unheard of, and neither is the hookup culture. However, there are quite a few serious couples in every circle of friends.

Girls and Guys Are Hot...

But typical. The population of girls and guys at Lafayette is homogeneous. The girls dress and act the same. The guys wear tons of sweats, and the occasional pair of jeans. The girls wear leggings, lafayette hoodies, and rain boots (no matter the weather).

Greek or Geek

The guys are, in my opinion, unattractive; however, they think they are the hottest human beings on campus. Personally, I don't find salmon colored pants and ray ban sunglasses attractive or masculine. This campus is comprised of a profuse amount of athletes. Almost everyone could model for an Adidas advertisement. There is an unusual amount of pretty girls on campus, which gets irritating, as they can be extremely snobby. Apparently having bleached blonde hair and participating in a sport makes you significantly better than others. Don't get me started on Greek life. Trying to get into a sorority/fraternity here is almost everyone's top priority. I think if one of the requirements was to sell your soul, half the campus would be soul-less. Maybe that is a requirement...that would explain a lot. But anyway, this campus is dominated by frequent drinkers that take great pride in bouts of memory loss, athletes with perfect bodies, and quite a few dorks. Rarely will you find a normal person. Also, expect a great amount of liberals here. If you are not like the majority of people I've described, by all means come to this school. We need more of you.

What kinds of relationships have you had since coming to school?

How would you rate the social scene on campus?

Facts

Social Scene

Only around 30 percent of the campus is involved in Greek life. For the first year of college life, students get the opportunity to mingle with various social groups—Greek life and otherwise—before deciding on their niches. Starting fall semester of sophomore year, students can choose whether to "rush" or not. There are parties on the weekends, usually hosted by Greek life and the sports teams.

Hookups or Relationships?

People at Lafayette are either together seriously or hooking up with someone; there is really no "dating" here. A lot of the Lafayette social scene revolves around random hookups at parties and whatnot, but there's really no way to generalize. There is definitely a lot of casual sex going on, as well, although it's a bit under the radar. When people are in relationships, they are usually serious.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

The best place to meet your future mate at Lafayette would probably be in the dorm environment, through mutual friends, or at a party. Upperclassmen who travel down to the Circle to hit the bars can make some new "friends" that way, as karaoke on Wednesday nights and drink specials on Fridays and Saturdays cause them to become crowded with students and townies alike.

Dress Code

Lafayette College is a fashion-conscious campus for the most part; most of the female students put in effort to look presentable for the day. Male students don’t slack off in the fashion department, either. “Put together” is the phrase to describe the dress code here. However, the campus does have students who dress casually to class in sweatpants, sweatshirts, and sneakers.
