College Prowler Take
In relation to campus crime, there really isn’t that much. There have been a few isolated events on campus, but none life-threatening. There are the usual college crimes: underage drinking, theft, sexual assaults, and alarmingly ethnic and racial intimidation. Lafayette College, in the wake of the Virginia Tech massacre, continues to make efforts to increase how safe students feel on campus. Public Safety begs students and faculty alike to sign up for text message updates in case of an emergency and encourages students to come to them and report crimes. Blue-lights surround the campus with phone boxes in case of an emergency, but these are so rarely used that opening one can cause a whole family of spiders to fall out. Students don’t take precautions all that seriously. Health services on campus leave a lot to be desired. Students are known to self-diagnose before turning to the Bailey Health Center for medicine, as many feel that they might be misdiagnosed. On the contrary, the Counseling Center is a great resource. It is a big help for those who are in need of psychological services and even academic and time-management help. The only issue with this Center is that it is sometimes hard to get an appointment.

Public Safety does their best to work with and for the students; however, they are not always the most helpful during snowstorms. Because the staff is so small, it is hard to get to and from places (in the snow) if you live off campus. Like the teaching staff, the officers know who the students are, which is both a good and bad thing. |

With the exception of an occasional drunk stumbling and yelling, it feels very safe to walk around campus, even late at night. |

Security and safety are really good on campus. I’ve never had an issue with it. I think a Public Safety car can be seen driving around at any point during the night to basically any point on campus. |

All in all, the campus feels pretty safe. However, I am a little worried by the fact that anyone could just walk up the stairs from town and into the college; although it’s unlikely. |

Public Safety is clearly there all the time, and if you call them, there will be someone there within five minutes. |
