Las Positas offers online education in almost every subject area through Blackboard. This interactive system offers students who might have time constraints to experience a class online. Online classes feature interactive videos, readings, and PowerPoint lectures to cover material. To take these classes, all students need is access to a computer with Internet. Las Positas has complete guides on how to use Blackboard, and students will perform menial tasks such as uploading, posting, and reading on the system. Most students report an ease of use with the online system. Faculty make themselves available mainly through email and discussion on the discussion board. Students must be responsible in contacting their instructor in a timely fashion. Many faculty use an open chat hour for their office hours, where students can chat or even Skype with them. Students can interact with other students through group assignments, chatting, or discussion boards. Overall, there is a feeling of less interaction with students due to the online nature.
Testing online is rigorous, with quizzes every week, and a midterm plus a final. Grading depends on what the instructor stipulates. Overall, many students comment on how online classes might be more rigorous than traditional classes, due to the heavy workload and time-sensitive assignments. Students must be organized and aware of the due dates in order to succeed in an online course.
