Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Students do not come to Lawrence thinking they can slack on their studies. Whether they are athletes, frat guys, or total burnouts, they study. if they seem like they don’t, then they are what we call “closet studiers”—they study at night while no one is watching. The academic load varies from major to major, but each department has extremely well educated and experienced professors that are dedicated to their jobs. Students may complain about assignments or course content, but the professors are almost never criticized as being bad teachers. With such small classes, professors will notice when students skip class, but more importantly, the size allows professors to know each of their students on a personal level. Studying at a small school also has its drawbacks. Small schools mean fewer teachers, which means fewer classes, which inevitably leads to subject limitation. Lawrence is sensitive to this issue and compensates by being extremely flexible with a student’s academic schedule. Tutorials and student-designed majors are options for any fields in which a class or major is not designated. Lawrence also hosts many lectures and exhibits on campus about the latest research and workshops about resumes and graduate study. Students can go as far as they want in their studies; Lawrence offers more opportunities academically than any person can possibly take.

Professors Are Very Available

I recently declared my major, but the professors are always really available with their office hours or just to talk after class. The introductory course in my major was a good preview into what it will be like during my upcoming years in college.

Tough but Caring

Lawrence University offers small class sizes and professors that are willing to help anytime. Because of the trimester schedule students in the university (not the conservatory) generally take 3 classes but some overload and take 4. Because students take only 3 classes professors expect that students focus more heavily on their classes. It is also very easy to have a self designed class. Because of the fewer students professors can focus more on each student and what that student wants to study. There are amazing study aboard programs all around the world and it is highly encouraged. Physics and Biology are popular areas of study.
