Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

It’s not a good sign for the athletic department when most students don’t know what the school mascot is. And the gym is just far enough that some have no idea where it is, so game attendance is low. This is a Division III school, so sports aren’t extremely serious anyway, but the department definitely takes the backseat. Unfortunately, the sports teams do not usually have a winning record, which is the main reason athletics remains overlooked. There is a fair amount of sports participation. The athletic schedule is pretty demanding, so those who are involved do take their team seriously. Their teammates end up being the people they see most often, no matter the season.

There is probably more participation in club and intramural sports than in varsity sports. The ultimate Frisbee team remains a campus favorite, and quite a few people play intramural basketball. varsity, club, or intramural sports can be as serious as you want them to be. Most use them as a break from the rigor of academia but do not consider them a bigger priority.

Not Much...

We're a D3 school. There's a football team that looses almost every game, and a tiny number of students even bother going to home games. (and few students who seem to care that we have a football team?) The talent lies more in the conservatory and other arts. When I was a freshman, my RLAs would often convince us to see student recitals or theater productions on Saturday afternoons.

An advantage to this is if you are motivated enough to show up to all the practices, you can join a lot of the sports even if you've never played/participated in that sport. You also don't have to worry about not having time for other things because of 2-a-days.

Athletic facilities aren't brilliant, but relatively decent for the casual athlete.

We Have Athletics?

Other than having one friend on the track team, I virtually never hear about athletics at Lawrence. The football team is sad, especially considering I was raised to worship the pigskin. If you're looking for exciting athletics, Lawrence is not the place for you.

Not a Sporty School

Sports are not a huge part of campus life at Lawrence. Very few students attend the games of any sport, and our sports teams are nothing to write home about.

School Spirit

You will rarely see anyone besides athletes sporting Lawrence gear, outside of freshman studies T-shirts. While school spirit of the most blatant kind is not apparent, Lawrentians seem to harbor a love for their school. In addition to commiserating with one another over the course load and the weird meat at Downer, school spirit is evident in large concert events and special events in which students with different interests come together. While they may complain about the cold winters or the cinder block freshman dorms, in the end they appreciate the education they receive here.
