Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Mandatory on-campus housing for students can seem stifling, but it does preserve the home-away-from-home sentiment. For incoming freshmen especially, the dorms, mixed in gender, age, and major, help acquaint students with the inner workings of the school. Many of the standard dorms are relatively old and have their own quirky history and charm. The personality differences are much more important to keep in mind than the physical discrepancies of the dorms. If dorm life isn’t for you, after freshman year there is an option of living in small theme houses. These houses have a much more personal atmosphere. A full kitchen helps it feel like living in a house. Otherwise, the upperclassman dorms also offer apartment-style living in a dorm setting. There are many different types of on-campus housing available for students that allow freedom from typical dorm life while still maintaining community on campus.

LU Campus Housing

Because everyone has to live on-campus all four years (with the exception of students who are married, have children, or have health-related issues), Lawrence tries to make sure that people are happy with where they live. The dorm rooms are decently sized, and there are many different options. There are 7 dorm buildings, with a bunch of difference sizes and shapes of rooms. Apart from dorms, you can live in theme houses (in the past, there has been Outdoor Recreation Club house, Greenfire - the eco-friendly group house, SLUG - the Sustainable Lawrence University Garden club house, among others), or there are also some fraternities for the men (there are sororities on-campus as well, but they don't have housing).

Huge Rooms!

The dorms are amazing. All my friends from other schools never believe how big our dorms are. There are several dorms and each one creates a special community. Due to the small campus all the dorms are pretty close to everything.

All Dorms Are in a Convenient Location

The freshman dorms are big compared to others I've seen, and the options for upperclassmen are awesome. All the dorms are close to something because the campus is so small, so everyone has their own opinions on which residence hall is the best.

Yes, in public areas only. Custodians clean dorms daily but do not clean private/semi-private bathrooms.

Did You Know? Brokaw, now an administration building, used to be an all-male dormitory. Due to firecrackers thrown down a laundry chute, the better part of the dorm burned down, leaving 50 students homeless. During its "Good Ship Brokaw" days, the building housed 150 sailors.
