College Prowler Take

Mandatory on-campus housing for students can seem stifling, but it does preserve the home-away-from-home sentiment. For incoming freshman especially, the dorms, mixed in gender, age, and major, help acquaint students with the inner workings of the school. Many of the standard dorms are relatively old and have their own quirky history and charm. The personality differences are much more important to keep in mind than the physical discrepancies of the dorms. If dorm life isn’t for you, after freshman year there is an option of living in small theme houses. These houses have a much more personal atmosphere. a full kitchen helps it feel like living in a house. Otherwise, the upperclassmen dorms also offer apartment-style living in a dorm setting. There are many different types of on-campus housing available for students that allow freedom from typical dorm life while still maintaining community on campus.

I really like the dorm system at this school. You use a star key to get into any dorm at night, which is nice because you can visit friends and not have any division between the dorms. Also, it keeps random people from wandering in at late hours.

Living in Sage Hall for the first year, right across from the frat houses, made it seem as if Greek life dominates the social scene. It pretty much does, but there are many other things to do. Whenever some frat party is going on, though, it is usually the talk of the weekend.

Hiett is always the most coveted, though I particularly love Sage. The dorms in general are fine, but the best ones are Hiett, Sage, and Ormsby. The worst ones are Plantz and Trever: Plantz for its condition and Trever for its location and the fourth floor’s lack of furniture.

Sage is wonderful—it has a lot of personality. Plantz is pretty convenient for conservatory students, Trever has great scenery, and Ormsby is very conveniently located as well.

The dorms are typical college dorms, but I’ve heard from non-Lawrentians that they are big. Colman is a really good dorm, especially for the sink in every room. Ormsby is also pretty nice, as it has very good sized rooms.

Did You Know?

Brokaw, now an administration building, used to be an all male dormitory. Due to firecrackers thrown down a laundry chute, the better part of the dorm burned down, leaving 50 students homeless. During its “Good Ship Brokaw” days, the building housed 150 sailors.
