Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Computers are ubiquitous. Students should prepare to check their school e-mail accounts several times a day and familiarize themselves with common computer programs. Regular computer use is common in every discipline. Science, English, foreign language, and music classes are just a few of the disciplines which require heavy computer use.

While it is promising that Lawrence academics are integrating technology use in the classroom, the facilities may not comfortably allow that for students. Most students have laptops for both work and play. Life can be very difficult without a laptop, because professors and students expect quick email responses, and email programs are not available on every general use computer. Bringing your own computer may be extremely useful, especially if you do not enjoy working in loud environments, as the labs tend to be. Additionally, ITS (Information Technology Services) will fix personal laptops, although they fix Lawrence network connections more quickly. It is very possible to go through college without one’s own computer, but Lawrence doesn’t always make it easy.

Wireless Everywhere

All dorms are now wireless, which is great. Internet speed is fine unless you are streaming on a friday night, then you may have to wait a bit.

Functional, High Technology for Completing Labs, Wireless Always Works

The computers at Lawrence University are always functional, but the labs do become busy during finals time but if there is not room in a certain lab, there are always computers available at another near by lab

I would definitely suggest...

I would definitely suggest bringing your own computer, especially if you want to use AIM or any other instant-messaging service. The computers labs are usually only filled when it’s finals or the last week of class, but even then you can usually find one somewhere, just not close to your dorm. Also, the printing is free, which is great.
