College Prowler Take
Computers are ubiquitous. Students should prepare to check their school e-mail accounts several times a day and familiarize themselves with common computer programs. Regular computer use is common in every discipline. Science, English, foreign language, and music classes are just a few of the disciplines which require heavy computer use. While it is promising that Lawrence academics are integrating technology use in the classroom, the facilities may not comfortably allow that for students. Most students have laptops for both work and play. Life can be very difficult without a laptop, because professors and students expect quick email responses, and email programs are not available on every general use computer. Bringing your own computer may be extremely useful, especially if you do not enjoy working in loud environments, as the labs tend to be. Additionally, ITS (Information Technology Services) will fix personal laptops, although they fix Lawrence network connections more quickly. It is very possible to go through college without one’s own computer, but Lawrence doesn’t always make it easy.

I would definitely suggest bringing your own computer, especially if you want to use AIM or any other instant-messaging service. The computers labs are usually only filled when it’s finals or the last week of class, but even then you can usually find one somewhere, just not close to your dorm. Also, the printing is free, which is great. |

Even though there are plenty of computers on campus, it would be nice to have your own computer in your room to work on papers, etc. Printers on campus are a little less reliable/available. |

There are computer labs in every building, and students can access files on the network, which is convenient for working on projects between classes or printing a paper. |

Computer labs are usually full right around the times you need them the most, like finals, midterms, etc. I would encourage bringing your own computer, but if you can’t, it is possible to find them around. |

One can survive at Lawrence without a computer. It’s really nice that there are computer labs in the basement of every dorm. Usually the labs are prettycrowded around finals, but it is always possible to find a computer somewhere. |
