Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

In comparison to the rest of appleton, Lawrence University provides a lot of color to the town in ethnicity and opinion. According to U.S. News, there are nearly 50 countries represented on campus. The international community holds its rich diversity highly and does what it can to involve the rest of the campus in overcoming differences. Sometimes organizations hold dinners where students cook favorite dishes from their home countries or show famous foreign films for free. The largest affair of the year is the Lawrence international Cabaret. With song, dance, and fashion, students showcase different ethnicities on campus. afterward, a catered dinner feeds the audience with food from several countries ranging from Japan to Russia to South Africa. Lawrence students do not shy away from displaying their opinions, even if they are unpopular or scandalous. Freedom of speech is active and prominent. Students are very different from each other, whether it is in ethnicity or lifestyle, making it very hard to categorize what “type” of person goes to Lawrence. Students, however, do wish for greater diversity on campus. about 30 percent of students are from Wisconsin, which dampens the feeling of diversity quite a bit.

Being a Gay Girl in Wisconsin

Lawrence University has turned out to be an incredibly open and accepting school regarding diversity in sexual orientation. While everybody has been accepting and encouraging of diversity, through promotion of our school's GLOW (Gay, Lesbian, or Whatever) club, classes on gender, sexuality, and events on campus, I still have yet to form strong friendships or relationships with people of other sexual orientations. Overall, the campus is extremely accepting but I think the population of LGBTQ students needs to be larger.

For What It's Worth - Pretty Diverse.

For a midwest, Wisconsin liberal arts college. It is pretty diverse, they really try. There are a lot of international students from all over the world.

Accepting

Lawrence has a fairly diverse campus. Though the majority of students are white, I would say they are very accepting, especially regarding sexual orientation. There are many different racial, ethnic, political, and sexual orientation related clubs and organizations on campus.

Facts

Gay Pride

The gay community on campus is pretty sizable, and the campus is extremely welcoming. Activism from the student organization GLOW (Gay, Lesbian, Other, or Whatever) is always enthusiastic.

Political Activity

A great majority of campus is liberal and very politically active, but the activity of the left wing is just as strong as that of the right. John Kerry came to Lawrence to give a rally in 2004, and despite the huge campus support for the candidate, the few relentless Republicans came to protest, with two students dressed as flip-flops. In any case, students just want their voices to be heard.

Economic Status

Lawrence students cover a large range of economic backgrounds, but they do not seem to lean toward the wealthy like at many other private schools. The school is generous with financial aid, allowing more opportunities for students who don’t have the funds.

Most Common Religions

There is a Christian group and a Jewish group, but neither is substantial on campus. There are many churches in Appleton that hold services that students are welcome to attend.

Minority Clubs on Campus

Although Lawrence is not extremely diverse, the minority culture is very prominent. There are language tables at almost every meal (Spanish, Japanese, Russian, etc.) for the purposes of learning both the language and the culture. Also, each year, the student organization Lawrence International holds the International Cabaret, a huge production with food, music, dancing, and a fashion show showcasing all countries represented on campus.
