College Prowler Take
While many facilities like Plantz Hall are reminiscent of their 1960s building dates, Lawrence seems to be remedying the old with the Warch Campus Center. This facility, opened in fall 2009, houses the new dining services, replacing the old Jason Downer Commons. Lawrence offsets the small size of the rec center with free memberships at the nearby YMCA. They have more equipment and space than a small school can afford. The Union, the central place on campus for hanging out, is also a small space for so much commotion, so the school has made plans to completely rebuild it as well, even spoiling students with warm fireplaces. Lawrence is a very old school, so some of the buildings stand a little sub-par, but others are extraordinary. Main Hall, for example, retains much of its original 1853-built exterior, but is modernized with computers and A/C on the indoors. Much of the campus has been newly rebuilt, or is in the renovation process, so campus facilities are quickly improving. The facilities on campus for arts and academics are especially aesthetically pleasing. But the Memorial Chapel, built in the early 1900s, is a mainstay. Many highly esteemed speakers and talented musicians have performed there. Björklunden is another of Lawrence’s most prized facilities. This fantastic lodge in Door County, a woodsy community right next to Lake Michigan, is preserved as a place of peace and contemplation. Just about two hours away, Björklunden is Lawrence’s weekend escape into nature.

Björklunden is a beautiful weekend retreat lodge in Door County, right on Lake Michigan. A lot of professors will take their classes there, or entire departments might go for the weekend. Most people would never really think of Wisconsin as picturesque, especially because there are no mountains, but it really is a beautiful, special place in every season. |

The athletic centers are kind of old. People tend to use the YMCA more. The student center is also old, but there are plans for renovation soon. The academic buildings are all very nice, however, and well kept. |

Campus facilities are fine for a campus of our size. I don’t expect them to be state-of-the-art buildings. |

Favorite Things To Do
One of the most popular buildings on campus is the Memorial Chapel. Lawrence brings in an impressive array of speakers and professional musicians that fill the 1,248-seat building. Recently, Lawrence students listened to the Susan Graham, Ben Stein, and Frank Rich. While these events are not mandatory, hundreds come to listen, serving as a great reminder of how eager students are to listen and learn. Students can also catch student performances in any of the four performance halls or at open mic night at the Coffeehouse. Beforehand, grab a bite to eat at the Grill or a drink at the Coffeehouse or the Viking Room.
The rec center (Buchanan Kiewit Recreation Center) is constantly being used for either intramural sports or classes. School performances also gather a good crowd in the performance halls. There is a play or music performance held almost everyday.
