Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Greek life at Lawrence is unusual, but that is something the members pride themselves in. Most students involved in a sorority or fraternity would have never considered joining one at a larger school, but because of the size of Lawrence, Greek life is much more casual and laid-back than you might find at most other campuses. Almost none of the stereotypes about Greek life hold true on this campus. It is rare to hear that a student wanted to join a certain fraternity or sorority and was denied that opportunity. Usually a potential member will have several groups to choose from at the end of the recruitment rounds. Each Greek organization is pretty distinctive from the others, so there is a sorority or fraternity that will suit almost any personality. Less than 30 percent of campus has Greek affiliation, so it doesn’t have as strong of an impact on social life as it might at other schools. The frat houses host all-campus parties at least once per term, but the social activities are outnumbered by the community service activities performed under the Greek system. Greek life is easily available for anyone, but it is also as easily ignorable on campus.

Ehhhh...

The Greeks are cool. Housing is provided for the frats and not the sororities because of some funding issues with our donors (from what I heard). There are no NPHChapters, so I'm not really interested in Greek life. But the Greeks are generally warm hearted individuals.

Decent

There are a few fraternities with houses, but the sororities don't have houses, the have meeting rooms. Participation in both is pretty high though

Greek Life at LU Offers Opportunity for Community Service

Greek Life at Lawrence doesn't offer the same positives, but more importantly the negatives of larger schools. The positive elements of Greek Life at LU include but are certainly not limited to greater opportunity for organized community service. The Greek system is adjusting to new housing policies which have been evolving for the last decade, and University Admins and leaders within the fraternities and sororities are dedicated to making the Greek system a positive aspect of the community at Lawrence. You can get by just fine at Lawrence without being affiliated, but it is certainly a good thing to consider when you get started at the school.
