Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

A well-known rumor about the student body is that Playboy listed LU as one of the top colleges with the least attractive women. When this poll was taken or if the rumor has any validity remains a mystery, but nonetheless, the story is still told. It has become an unspoken understanding that, generally, neither gender has much to offer physically. Be prepared to don the “Lawrence goggles” when you step onto campus. Suddenly intellect and talent will strangely overshadow a person’s attractiveness.

One would think that putting mature, well-educated college students together would spawn deep long-lasting relationships, and sometimes that true. When students start relationships, they almost always are serious because Lawrentians don’t have extra time to waste on a fling. Single students will probably say the reason they are not in a serious relationship is because they are too busy for one. The arduous schedule challenges students to work hard and pursue their interests, and a needy significant other would just cramp their styles. With life at such a fast pace, relationships tend to be short-lived and cursory. But it shouldn’t be ignored that college students need some kind of love during their journey toward self-realization.

Naturally Beautiful

You are not going to find the average bleach blonde at Lawrence. All the women are smart and naturally beautiful. They dress well and are well read. The men tend to dress very well and are active. Many ride around campus on long boards. Many people have relationships with people on campus. It is not difficult to find someone if you put yourself out there.

Guys Are Okay

They are a few catches, but for the most part, everyone is fairly mediocre. Many of the guys are either in sports or music.

What kinds of relationships have you had since coming to school?

How would you rate the social scene on campus?

Facts

Social Scene

At such a small school, the social scene is what you make of it. If you prefer sticking with your small group, you can, and you can still enjoy a good social life. The scene tends to get cliquey, but that doesn't prevent people from getting to know each other. On the contrary, students get familiar quickly. There are no strangers, so people feel familiar and safe, but at times the social bubble is reminiscent of high school. There is a more underground social scene with the music conservatory students. Music majors and college students can seem separate at times, but both college majors appreciate the talents of their musician friends and vice-versa. Music is a pervasive force, however, for forming friendships because it seems that everyone has some sort of professional or recreational interest in music.

Hookups or Relationships?

Like the social scene, it's high school all over again. There are those few couples that stay together, but otherwise the guys and girls are afraid of commitment. Terms "dating" and "relationship" will never be heard around campus. Boundaries between couples are sometimes vague, but the rest of campus will probably know the extent of their relationship. The majority of campus is single, but that doesn't always mean that they are—insert another ambiguous term here—"available." However, a persistent rumor around campus is that anywhere from 60 to 70 percent of Lawrentians marry other Lawrentians. The truth of this rumor is yet to be proven, but it seems like a lot of couples who get together at Lawrence stay in it for the long haul.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

Ladies and gentlemen, you will not find love in the basements of frat houses. Sparks fly, instead, in classrooms, study sessions, and those enticing club meetings. A lot of students are very focused on academics and extracurricular activities important to them, so the time spent toward them becomes a good measure of their social life. A future significant other may be sitting right next to you at the next school jazz band concert or on the second floor of the library with you after school.

Dress Code

In terms of clothing, it's practicality over anything else. When it begins to get cold consistently, people tend to give up trying to look fashionable while layered in armor and hunched over to keep warm on their way to class in a snowstorm. Generally, people are likely to be less maintenance-based in their appearance. But it should not be overlooked that, instead of being trendy, the students have a lot of individual style. Most students get more creative than wearing popped polos with Abercrombie and Fitch cords. This isn't a "preppy" school either; you will absolutely never see a girl at Lawrence sporting a pearl necklace with her Lily Pulitzer. Sweatpants, however, are a mainstay. They are what you wear on Saturday mornings to go to brunch, and they soon become the attire for your first class of the day. But for the weekends, bring your most outrageous clothing—even your snakeskin pants that you keep in the back of your closet. Oh, don't worry, they will find use.
