Appleton may not be a cosmopolitan destination, but the area is unique and has its own endearing qualities that Lawrence students soon come to appreciate. Appleton is a blend of Midwest charm and suburban blasé. The History Museum is a quintessential example of Appleton’s wholesome-yet-strange quirkiness. An exhibit on Harry Houdini and his accomplishments is on display year-round. Otherwise, there are several banks, a bookstore, coffee shops, cheap restaurants, small boutiques, and pharmacies—everything a college student needs—within walking distance. But the most popular and abundant establishments in walking distance are the bars. College students and local residents fill these bars every night of the week.

The only places that may outnumber the bars are the churches that dominate Appleton’s street corners. Morgan Quitno Press’ annual list of America’s safest cities ranked Appleton as the safest metropolitan area in the United States. Appleton is a conservative, safe, and welcoming community. It is the type of pleasantly predictable area to raise a family, and it is very quiet. College Avenue offers a strip of unique shops, but if it gets too stifling for you, Madison, otherwise known as Mad-town, is only a short drive away.

Nothing Is Too Far

There is everything near Lawrence. there are malls,great pizza shops, bars, and even the Green Bay Packers are just down the road in Green Bay. The residents are very accepting of the students.

Pretty Boring

Appleton is a pretty boring place, especially if you don't have a car. It's very easy to get stuck in the Lawrence bubble without getting off campus, but there's not much to do once you're off. The shops on College Avenue are quaint, and the Fox Cities PAC boasts its musicals, but, overall, there's almost nothing to do in Appleton.

The Community of Appleton, WI

Appleton is continually rated in the top 100 places to live in the nation and it is to no surprise. Appleton is very safe and full of life. Downtown Appleton is literally right down the street from Lawrence University, some claim it to be on campus. The Fox Valley Mall is only a 7 minute drive from campus along with Walmart and many other restaurants and attractions making Appleton very appealing to college students.
