Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Nightlife at Lawrence consists of so many subcultures that there is bound to be a party going on somewhere on campus, but the term “party” is used loosely. Parties don’t have kegs or girls running around topless, for better or for worse. A significant part of campus does not drink, so good old fashioned fun like a Disney movie marathon or a night of board games in the dorms is a party for some. Organized parties happen every so often, and they usually draw a good crowd. The parties most people attend are the frat parties. They aren’t very often, but when one is put together, half the campus shows up. The frats have fun themes for people to look forward to each year, like the Phi Delt Foam Party, Delt Disco, and Beta Beach Bash. The nightlife is what you make of it on campus. But when another game of beer pong sounds taxing, future nights in store can seem pathetically unexciting. So most students cannot wait for the day they turn 21, legally or not. There are so many bars that it is unpredictable where you will end up on a night downtown. Until then, make a countdown to that fateful birthday.

F for Fail!

The night life here is boring and repetitive. There are room parties and theme parties sponsored by frats, and they suck because the music only caters to their taste and that's it. Off campus night life is even worse. There are only bars in our little town, and of course if you arent yet 21, you have to settle for drinking illegally in your room or somewhere else on campus.

Live Music Makes It Great!

All students are free to participate in the nightlife at Lawrence. Usually there is at least 1 house party a weekend and a fraternity party every other weekend. The small campus makes it easy to walk to all parties on campus, parties are advertised both on Facebook and with flyers in dorms, and there is not a huge pressure to drink so parties are mainly places to dance or hang out with friends. What I enjoy most about parties at Lawrence that I haven't encountered at any other school I've visited is the incredible live music that occurs at house parties. Either our drum group Sambistas, or 3 or 4 other great college groups will play and because most of the band members attend the music conservatory, the quality is always excellent!

Laid Back

There's almost always something to do on campus, but you'll probably have to search around a bit and occasionally make your own fun. Pretty low key most of the time, but it's fine - most students realize they're here to learn, not party.

What is the party scene like on campus?

What’s the best way to get to the popular nightlife spots?

Facts

Club Crawler

Bars tend to overshadow the potential of the clubs in Appleton. While there are only two clubs, few Lawrence students can be found in these establishments. While there are many local residents that support the clubs, students generally would rather spend their time with friends, taking shots or drinking beers, rather than grinding with strange townies.

Bar Prowler

Going to the same parties with the same people for four years can get stifling. The bars downtown allow a bit of breathing room for students, especially those who find it refreshing to see unfamiliar faces. Because the bars are so close to campus and there are constant drink specials, students will be seen hitting up the bars almost every night.

Organization Parties

One of the perks of having many theme houses on campus is the many theme house parties on campus. The Co-op’s “Nearly Naked” party and ORC’s “Southern Hick” party are examples of the often-outrageous themes they have. Lawrence International holds formals twice a year as fundraisers for the club. A significant amount of students attend in their formal wear.

Route 66

Route 66 is actually a renovated movie theatre made into a nightclub. It is completely dry and usually stays in the shadows of Park Central, which is a much larger establishment. Route 66 is open to those under 21 every Saturday and Sunday.

324 W. College Ave.

(920) 734-9266

Park Central

Although this is the only standard club on the avenue and it is so close to campus, students rarely venture to Park Central. The club has decent drink specials and a different theme for each night of the week, but students would much rather hit the bars than go to Park Central. However, it does offer those under 21 a place to go downtown. Depending on the day of the week, the club could be heard playing hip hop, top 40, or songs from the ‘70s, ‘80s, or ‘90s. There are even open mic hours three times a week.

The Speakeasy

The Speakeasy, its name a reference to illegal bars during Prohibition, is decked out in memorabilia from the roaring ‘20s. There are live DJs on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, and the food is very dependable.

Mill Creek Blues Café

Mill Creek is one of the best places to go for live music and food. Groups are always playing on the weekend, but you will find most Lawrence students there on Wednesday for ‘80s night.

417 W. College Ave.

(920) 738-7408

Wooden Nickel

Strangely enough, with the owner being one of the security guards on campus, the Nickel is a frequent stop for the students. There is great food, and the outdoor seating is nice when the weather is warm. Mondays are pretty popular because of $1 beer specials and trivia night.

217 E. College Ave.

(920) 725-0661

Tom’s Garage

The music is what draws in the crowds at Tom’s Garage. Live bands will play everything, including country, folk, jazz, rock, and bluegrass. Students from Lawrence perform there regularly. There is also a great menu, a separate bar, and a game room. There may be an admission charge at the door, but the money always goes to the artists.

222 W. Franklin St.

(920) 882-2183

Jim’s Place

Jim’s is the best bet for finding fellow Lawrence students on the avenue. It is one of the closest bars to campus, making it extremely convenient during cold winter nights. The drinks are cheap as well, a plus for college students low on cash.

223 W. College Ave.

(920) 730-8091

Cleo’s Brown Beam Tavern

This bar usually attracts more of a middle-aged local crowd, but students love their specialty drinks, especially the Suffering Bastard and the Dirty Snowball. The place is always in the mood for the holidays, with lights, jack-o’-lanterns, and plastic Santas around. The crowd and the decorations are erratic, but the drinks are always dependable.

203 W. College Ave.

(920) 739-2288

The Bar on the Avenue

As one of the most popular sports bars on the avenue, students love heading down to The Bar to visit Lawrence students that work there and partake in the great food they serve. The Bar is famous for its great wings.

427 W. College Ave.

(920) 882-0690

Dr. Jekyll’s

One of the closest bars to campus, Jekyll’s used to be the most popular bar for students. It has a ‘70s-era motif with red and white floor tiles and a key-shaped bar. But once they started asking for two forms of ID at the door, students moved just a few feet down on the avenue for a drink.

314 E. College Ave.

(920) 733-9883

Déjà Vu Martini Lounge

Students can find live jazz on Wednesday and Saturday evenings in a relaxed bar setting. Fewer students tend to go to Déjà Vu because of their expensive drinks, but their martinis are a great indulgence. They serve more than 70 varieties of martinis, including the chocolate martini and the Cosmopolitan.

519 W. College Ave.

(920) 380-9904

What to Do if You're Not 21What's This?

Without being over 21 in some form or another, nightlife is rather restricted. Students falling into this unfortunate category usually stay on campus and stick to frat parties and the scattered dorm and theme-house parties. Downtown, Park Central and Route 66 are options, but are rarely taken advantage of. Tom’s Garage draws in a considerable younger crowd when Lawrence students play there, though.
